Everhart, Glenn From: helbig@man.ac.uk Sent: Sunday, July 05, 1998 10:43 AM To: Info-VAX@Mvb.Saic.Com Subject: Official Digital indefinite commitment in writing to workstation VMS I've just been rearranging some things in my office after having been away for a while (and making room for some used Digital Equipment I was fortunate enough to have picked up) and ran across the (German language) DECUS Bulletin #73 from August 1997. There is a supplement called `209 questions to Digital and 209 answers'. The third question (my translation) is How long will DIGITAL continue to offer PCI-AlphaStations with OpenVMS? and the answer is DIGITAL will continue to offer PCI based AlphaStations as long as both technologies (PCI or ALPHA) exist, that is, long into the next century. All future workstations from DIGITAL's AlphaStation series will continue to support OpenVMS as a strategic product. Now, in detail, one could say that this commitment only applies to the ALPHAstation series---call it something else, and the commitment no longer exists. But if this was the intention, as an answer to the question it is very misleading. -- Phillip Helbig Email .......... p.helbig@jb.man.ac.uk Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories Tel. ..... +44 1477 571 321 (ext. 297) Jodrell Bank Fax ................. +44 1477 571 618 Macclesfield Telex ................. 36149 JODREL G UK-Cheshire SK11 9DL Web .... http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~pjh/ My opinions are not necessarily those of NRAL or the University of Manchester.
