In my course of trying out patches to V5.5-2 (VAX) DKDRIVER I've come up with a "solution" that may be ueful to a few: a variant that instead of complaining, permanently clears ARRE and AWRE, in case it finds them set at MOUNT time. This is a derivative from the previously announced DKDRIVER-ZIP which has served me to operate an IOMEGA ZIP 100 drive under VMS V5.5-2 (still no opportunity to borrow a JAZ drive - soon to come). Not that I had tested _many_ drives with that driver, but it's rather unlikely to hurt ... When fiddling around with DKDRIVER and "strange" SCSI devices, a nice thing to have is a VAX that supports SCSI but has a non-SCSI system disk. A particular inexpensive kind of machine which has this property are Vs2000/uVAX 2000 boxes with the "pizza box" below that already has the SCSI connector (called "tape controller" at the time), or quite easily augmented with any 50-lead "internal" SCSI cable, running V5.5-2 with PK2KDRVR (sorry, it's not available for other VMS versions either). Find the DKDRIVER patches in ftp://gwdw04.gwdg.de/vms/dk-552/ ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/vms/dk-552/ and the Vs2000/uVAX 2000 SCSI port driver in ftp://gwdw04.gwdg.de/vms/pk2k/ ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/vms/pk2k/ Please let me know if the README files in either directory aren't clear enough. Note: This isn't exactly the right stuff for 'hobbyist' newcomers, but anyway a good reason not to discard those venerable *VAX*2000 "single-board" computers, each of which has an operational (with slight limitations) SCSI controller on the board.
