Article 169695 of comp.os.vms: At a recent computer/hamfest, I picked up a 19" grayscale DEC VR260-AA monitor really cheap. I have an ISA Diamond Speedstar Pro that I want to use it with. I've built the VGA-to-RGB conversion circuit from the Apollo FAQ (see http://cvs.anu.edu.au:80/monitorconversion/apollo.html) and I use only the Green input. Using XFree86 under Linux, I have been successful in getting a reasonably stable screen, but I have the following problems. 1. No matter what I do, the left side of the screen wraps off the edge of the screen (by about 55-60 pixels). I've tried adjusting my modelines according to the instructions in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to XFree", but nothing seems to change the left side. It's useable enough for the price I paid for it (and the fact that it replaces a 12" VGA monitor) but I'd like to get this problem fixed. 2. The very top of the screen is "wobbly" and windows put at the top cause the screen to loose sync (so do windows that are completely black). If it has no video input and the contrast and brightness are turned up until the scan lines are visible, they are at regular intervals from the bottom to the middle. At the top, though, they get closer and closer together. Is this normal? Can anyone shed any light on what may be causing these phenomena? Could it be my sloppily made cable? I've wondered if these indicate a hardware problem (which could very well be case given the price I paid). If it does indicate a hardware problem, does anyone know if the VR260-AA has any internal controls for adjustment that I can use to fix these problems? Thanks, William Safley safley@pha.jhu.edu
