ELM - What's New This page will give you info on what is new with the "ELM Pages". [Last update: Wed Mar 6 06:06:06 MET 1996] Do you want to see new features with ELM? Well, check out the (short version) of the ELM2.5 wishlist. A more detailed description of the features is on the ELM - Development Page. [960306] ELM - Definition In case you do not know what ELM is - let me give you a short definition: ELM is a "Mail User Agent (MUA), ie a program which acts between you, the user, and the programs that actually transport the mail between computers. Programs which transport mail are called MTAs ("Mail Transfer Agents"). Examples are "sendmail", "smail" and "rmail". You can think of ELM as an abbreviation of "ELectronic Mail" as well as "Easy-to-Learn Mail program". [950615] Now you know that mail works something like this: You <-> MUA <-> MTA <-> ... <-> MTA <-> MUA <-> Someone ELM is a full replacement of programs like "/bin/mail" and "mailx". ELM - Status ELM is considered "Freely Distributable Software." Its copyright is held by the "USENET Community Trust". This ensures that it is available for all to use. ELM - Distribution of Sources ELM comes with a handful of other programs and with a lot of documentation. Get the ELM sources from any of the official distribution sites: ELM - Distribution [950403, 950516, 950712] ELM - Setup ELM includes both a builtin -> pager and a builtin -> editor. But you are not required to use them; if you are used to another editor or pager then you can use these by a simple change of ELM's setup. You can also choose your favourite print program and more! There are three setup files which you will likely use with ELM: The "elmrc", and both ".forward" and the "filter-rules". ELM - elmrc All about ELM setup file - the "elmrc". [950824,950904] Take a look at my setup files for an example: ELM - setup file ("elmrc") ELM's filter - setup file ("filter-rules") ELM's filter - setup file ("forward") [950824] ELM - Security by Encryption Email can easily be forged and even copied without your knowledge. Security for email thus requires a program for encryption/decryption. PGP is such a program. ELM - PGP Support This page includes information about several flavours of ELM which add support for PGP. They seem to have become quite popular recently. Some of the things may be in the upcoming releas for ELM2.5. Check them out! ELM - Frequently Asked Questions A lot of questions about ELM are answered by the "ELM FAQ" (FAQ := List of Frequently Asked Questions with answers). The FAQ is maintained by Piero Serini (piero@free.it) [950220,950831] ELM - FAQ NOTE: The size of the page is about 80 kilobytes! And this version is the latest copy I have here. The ELM FAQ hasn't been updated since 941209 as Piero was off the net for a while but he has promised to take up the work again and even make the FAQ available as a web page. [950901] If your connection to this site is slow then you probably consider getting the FAQ from other sites: ELM FAQ - Availability [950824] ELM - Newsgroup "comp.mail.elm" The newsgroup which specificically deals with elm is comp.mail.elm. Before you post your questions to this please read the following text: ElM - Newsgroup comp.mail.elm [950901] ELM - Mailing lists There are two mailing lists about ELM: "elm-dev" is the list for the "ELM Development Group" and "elm-test" is the list for the "ELM Testing Group". For more info see The Elm Development and Testing Groups at the Myxa Corp. ELM - Other Documents ELM acts as an interface between several programs - the editor, the pager, and scripts (such as the scripts that add support for PGP and MIME). Thus questions about these programs frequently arise, too. Luckily enough some people have written documents about these programs. Most of these documents are FAQs, too. This section will give a list of links to those other FAQs. Filtering FAQ Handling of incoming mail with a "filter" program. Installation and hints on customization. It's the latest version I have. NOTE: The size of this FAQ is 50K+. So if you are in the USA then you will probably get it a lot faster from the Ohio State University: [950418,950822] Filtering FAQ - Ohio State Univ ELM at Myxa Pages about ELM at Myxa Corporation.
