I should suggest this.

The stuff I sent you has the ability to have a user mode server
contacted (the jtdmn part) when someone tries opening a file.
If the file is stored across a network, it's perfectly feasible to
pull it into a local "cache" store and access it there. That kind
of thing is close enough to what AFS and the DCE DFS do that it
might be worth thinking about as a growth path for remote file
access. If the top level directory access is ever replaced by
a dbms, it is just one more step to involve some ability to access
search other sites. (For the record, DEC has my permission to do
such things with the code too.)
