(This particular Automatic Foreign Command mechanism is documented in the User's Guide.) I've previously submitted a problem report against the OpenVMS documentation, requesting that this stuff be made rather easier to find, and that cross-references for DCL$PATH be added. re: SYS$PIPE See the PIPE verb and related documentation in the DCL dictionary. The on-line HELP for the PIPE command is also quite expansive.
