The current version is 3.5.8 (June 21 1997) Please note that gv is derived from Tim Theisen's ghostview 1.5. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Screenshots * The main window * The main window if gv is invoked via "gv -style gv_spartan.dat" * The file-selection window * The setup options window * The file selection options window * The gv options window * The ghostscript options window --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Requirements * System requirements gv surely works on o Linux o OpenVMS AXP (DECC 5.2,DECC 5.0) I also got reports of happy users on o Solaris o FreeBSD o NetBSD o Digital UNIX o SunOS o HP/UX o Irix o OSF/1 o OS/2 o AIX If you find that gv is also useful on a system not listed above please send me a message so that the above list can be kept up to date. * Software requirements gv requires Kaleb Keithley's Xaw3d widget set. o VMS users will find everything required to install this widget set in the section 'Availability' below. o Unix users working on a system not equipped with this widget set may want to visit the section 'Availability and installation of Xaw3d' which may provide some assistance when trying to install Xaw3d. A few words about Xaw3d, especially adressed to Linux users: There is only one Xaw3d, the one found on ftp.x.org and its mirrors. However, there are some hacked versions out there on the net and some of their authors don't even bother to distribute their version under a different name. Since Xaw3d also intends to serve as a basis for application specific custom widgets to be created by subclassing existing widgets (one of the main strengths of the Xt Toolkit) these hacked libraries are likely to break applications using this feature (like gv). To make this long story short: when using gv with some hacked Xaw3d (including XawXpm, nextXaw or whatever they are called) you (attention here) are on your own. It might work but it might also not. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- More information Further information about gv concerning command line options, resources and keyboard and mouse bindings is available * either in html * or in postscript format. Peter Deutsch is the author of the ghostscript interpreter, without which gv would be not more than an empty hull. Kaleb S.Keithley turned Xaw into the extremely nice Xaw3d widget set. Keith Packard invented the Layout widget, the heart of gv's widget tree. I'd like to thank Martin Buck (Martin-2.Buck@student.uni-ulm.de) for not only extensively checking gv on Linux, Solaris, Irix and HP/UX but also for his suggestions, bug reports, bug fixes and discussions. Bjorn Nilsson (Bjorn.S.Nilsson@nbi.dk) put a lot of time into checking and fixing gv on Digital UNIX. Tim Adye (adye@v2.rl.ac.uk) and William Bader (william@nscs.fast.net) contributed large amounts of code to the recent versions of gv. Hopefully they are not too busy fixing the bugs that I built in when merging their patches into the code :-) Many thanks also to all those who sent me suggestions, bug fixes and workarounds for portability problems for FreeBSD, SunOS, AIX and other operating systems. Finally I'd like to thank Jim Jennis (jhjennis2@mmm.com) for carefully testing all versions of gv. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last modified Jun 21 1997 by jp.
