Subject: Open Source CORBA now available on OpenVMS Date: 21 Dec 2001 14:26:11 -0800 From: spence_m@ociweb.com (Malcolm Spence) Organization: http://groups.google.com/ Newsgroups: comp.os.vms Hi everybody, I just want to let you know we think there is still plenty of life left in OpenVMS. As a result we recently did a limited port of the open source CORBA Product that we support to it. The ORB is TAO (The ACE ORB), a high performance CORBA 2.3 compliant C++ ORB developed by Washington University in St. Louis, and now commercially supported by OCI. It was alimeted port in as much as TAO has a dozen CORBA services and we did not port all. We had a client who just wanted a naming service and the real time event channnel. If you need A/V, logging, notification, trader, load balancing or any other of the many services TAO has, then we will need to do a little more work. We alos ported our existing shipping version of TAO 1,1a. the new version 1.2a is due out shortly and will need validating. This was tricky port, and was made possible by our using the next version of OpenVMS with its more "Unix like" features. I cannot tell you when that will ship but please contact me and I will help you work with Compaq to get a sense of when you could plan on using it. TAO runs on an abstraction layer called ACE, which is a C++ framework and hides OS and communication issues. If you have apps designed for Unix they will easily port to ACE which now of course runs on OpenVMS. So now you have an easier time of getting existing C++ apps over to OpenVMS, if you choose. ACE is also open source. More information on ACE and TAO is available at http://www.theaceorb.com. We run on just about everything including Tru64, the WinCE O/S, many RTOSs, and of course most Unix strains. TAO has a zero cost license model for both development and runtime. No worries about this vendor dropping platform support, the TAO code is always right where you want it, if you wish, in your repository. We provide training, product supprt, consulting and migration help. Our goal is help you achieve an open, inclusive middleware infrastructure.
