Compaq Fast Virtual Machine (Fast VM) v 1.3.1-1
for the OpenVMS Operating System
for the Java Platform

Installation Notes

The Compaq Fast VM v 1.3.1-1 kit is packaged and installed separately from the Compaq Software Development Kit (SDK) for the OpenVMS Operating System and the Compaq Run Time Environment (RTE) v 1.3.1-1 for the OpenVMS Operating System. However, it is intended for use with the Compaq SDK v 1.3.1-1 (or higher) or the Compaq RTE v 1.3.1-1 (or higher). This Fast VM kit cannot be used with prior SDK and RTE releases. Following are the Fast VM Installation instructions for use with the SDK or for use with the RTE. For more information, see the Release Notes.

Kit Installation (for Use with the SDK)

This Fast VM kit requires the following to be installed on your system:

To install the Compaq Fast VM, perform the following steps:

  1. Download and install the Compaq SDK v 1.3.1 prerequisite ECOs listed above.

  2. Download the following file from our Software Download page:

    DEC-AXPVMS-FASTVM131-V0103-11-1.PCSI_SFX_AXPEXE (self-extracting)

  3. Execute the DEC-AXPVMS-FASTVM131-V0103-11-1.PCSI_SFX_AXPEXE file to unpack it and obtain the original DEC-AXPVMS-FASTVM131-V0103-11-1.PCSI file:
    $ run DEC-AXPVMS-FASTVM131-V0103-11-1.PCSI_SFX_AXPEXE
  4. Extract the release notes for this kit if you wish to create them locally before installation:
    $ PRODUCT EXTRACT RELEASE_NOTES FASTVM131-
         /SOURCE=[directory_where_you_put_the_PCSI_file]-
         /FILE=[directory_where_you_want_it]RELEASE_NOTES.HTML-
         /BASE_SYSTEM=AXPVMS

  5. Install the Fast VM v 1.3.1-1 from the .PCSI file obtained, using the PCSI (POLYCENTER Software Installation) utility PRODUCT command:
    $ PRODUCT INSTALL FASTVM131-
         /SOURCE=[directory_where_you_put_the_PCSI_file]-
         /BASE_SYSTEM=AXPVMS

    The Fast VM gets installed with the SDK v 1.3.1 in root directory SYS$COMMON:[JAVA$131]. Note that installing in the SYS$COMMON area requires privileges.

  6. To use the Fast VM, you must set it up as your virtual machine by running the following command procedure:
    $ @SYS$COMMON:[JAVA$131.COM]JAVA$131_SETUP FAST

  7. Important: Read the Compaq SDK Release Notes for additional information on how to use this product in an OpenVMS environment. The Release Notes are also located at SYS$COMMON:[JAVA$131.DOCS]RELEASE_NOTES.HTML.

To Determine your Java Environment Version if using the Compaq Fast VM with SDK

Before using the Fast VM, you need to ensure that SDK v 1.3.1-1 (or higher) is installed and is set up as your Java environment. To verify this, use the java -version command which will display the following message:

$ java -version
java version "1.3.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition
Classic VM (build 1.3.1-n ...)

where n identifies the specific SDK v 1.3.1 that is installed.

To make the Fast VM your virtual machine by using the FAST parameter, run the following command:

$ @SYS$COMMON:[JAVA$131.COM]JAVA$131_SETUP FAST

After you have done that, verify the Fast VM version by typing the java -version command. The screen displays the following:

$ java -version
java version "1.3.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition
Fast VM (build 1.3.1-1 ...)

Note: To revert to the classic virtual machine, type the following command:

$ @SYS$COMMON:[JAVA$131.COM]JAVA$131_SETUP

Refer to the General FAQ for an explanation of this version-naming convention.

Kit Installation (for Use with the RTE)

This Fast VM kit requires the following to be installed on your system:

  • RTE v 1.3.1-1 or higher (and its required prerequisites).
  • Same versions of OpenVMS as the SDK v 1.3.1-1. Please refer to the SDK v 1.3.1 Patch Installation Page for OpenVMS Alpha for more information.

This Fast VM kit is provided for developers who want to redistribute the Fast VM and the RTE v 1.3.1 with their application. This kit installs the Fast VM executables, which are placed in the RTE v 1.3.1 directory tree, subsequently making it easier to redistribute with your applications. For additional information about redistributing the Fast VM with the RTE v 1.3.1, see 'Bundling and Redistributing the Fast VM' in the Release Notes.

To install the Fast VM for the RTE, perform the following steps:

  1. Download DEC-AXPVMS-FASTVM131-JRE-V0103-11-1.SAV_SFX_AXPEXE from our Software Download page. Execute this file to create the FASTVM-JRE-V0103-11.A save set:
      $ RUN DEC-AXPVMS-FASTVM131-JRE-V0103-11-1.SAV_SFX_AXPEXE

    Unpack the FASTVM-JRE-V0103-11.A file into the appropriate subdirectories of your application. Continuing with the typical directory structure as described in the RTE Readme for OpenVMS Alpha, move the save sets into the [.JRE_RUNTIME_BASE] directory, then issue the following commands (edited to match your actual disk and directory names):

    $! Position yourself to the base directory for the RTE components

    $ SET DEFAULT user1$:[APP-DIR.JRE_RUNTIME_BASE]
    $!
    $! To unpack the FASTVM-JRE-V0103-11.A save set,
    $ BACKUP FASTVM-JRE-V0103-11.A/SAVE [...]*.*

In addition to unpacking the files in the RTE, there are a number of additional symbols and logicals that need to be set up to make your application run within the RTE.

When you deploy your application, you will have to include your own .COM files that accomplish these setups.

An RTE setup command file, JAVA$131_JRE_SETUP.COM, is deposited into the [.LIB] directory when the FASTVM-JRE-V0103-11.A save set is restored. This file contains the key commands you will need to merge into your application setup command file.

For more information, see the Release Notes.
