 rsync 2.5.3 (Development-2.5)
 by edlau - Monday, March 11th 2002 19:13 EST

About: rsync is a replacement for rcp (and scp) that has many more features. It uses the "rsync algorithm" which provides a very fast method for remote files into sync. Changes: A zlib double-free bug has been fixed, and there are other bugfixes and enchancements.

 zlib 1.1.4
 by edlau - Monday, March 11th 2002 19:12 EST

About: zlib is designed to be a free, general-purpose, legally unencumbered, lossless data-compression library for use on virtually any computer hardware and operating system. The zlib data format is itself portable across platforms. Unlike the LZW compression method used in Unix compress(1), the compression method currently used in zlib essentially never expands the data. (LZW can double or triple the file size in extreme cases.) zlib's memory footprint is also independent of the input data and can be reduced, if necessary, at some cost in compression.

Changes: A double free bug has been fixed.

 Magma 1.1 (Stable)
by Anders Lindén - Monday, March 11th 2002 19:12 EST

About: Magma is a bash script designed to make CD burning easier. It supports burning normal data CDs, audio CDs, and blank CDRWs. It is useful for burning and for creating ISO files.

Changes: Parts of burning.sh that didn't work at all have been rewritten. The useless CDDB lookup feature has been removed. The code has been commented some more. multi.sh has been rewritten, and might actually work now. An issue in Magma.sh where files in BURNDIR weren't removed when the option Clear BURNDIR was chosen has been fixed. A typo in mount_loop.sh has been corrected. A bug in convert_mp3s.sh where it wouldn't find any files in BURNDIR if they were linked there instead of copied has been fixed. There is minor tuning in all files.

 Meta-CVS 0.7 (Development)
by Kaz Kylheku - Monday, March 11th 2002 18:57 EST

About: Meta-CVS manages an alternate representation for a file system tree that allows changes in the directory structure to be stored by the Concurrent Versions System (CVS). Acting as a CVS front end, it replaces the cvs command with mcvs, allowing one to mcvs checkout, mcvs add, mcvs update, and so on. mcvs mv, which has no corresponding cvs command, is also included. The directory structure is not only versioned but can be subject to outright parallel development with support for merging and conflict resolution. Diffs can be made over the MCVS representation, so diff and patch are effectively amplified to handle renames.

Changes: On import and add, the program now collects file suffixes and brings up an editor to let the user specify the CVS keyword expansion mode for each hitherto unknown file type. Selective commits are allowed now. Recursive add (mcvs add -R) works.

 Arch Linux 0.1 (Development)

About: Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is lightweight and contains the latest stable versions of software. Packages are in .tar.gz format and are tracked by a package manager that is designed to allow easy package upgrades. Arch is quite streamlined compared to some other distributions. Things that are relatively unused are not kept (info pages, for example). A default Arch install leaves you with a solid base; from there, you can add packages to create the custom installation you're looking for. Arch has a package build system that allows you to easily create your own packages, which makes it very easy to rebuild a package with your own custom configuration. Arch also aims to use the newer features available to Linux users, such as reiserfs/ext3 and devfs.

 Robotcop 0.6
by Nick Popoff - Monday, March 11th 2002 15:17 EST

About: Robotcop is an open source module for webservers which helps webmasters prevent spiders from accessing parts of their sites they have marked off limits. Spiders which read the robots.txt file are held to its rules. If a spider breaks a law in that file, further requests from that spider are intercepted by Robotcop. The webmaster can create trap directories which are marked off limits in the robots.txt file. Spiders which access these trap directories in violation of the robots.txt file are also placed on an intercept list. It includes several interception methods which allows the webmaster to counterattack e-mail address harvesting spiders to trap them, poison their databases, or simply block them. It is a webserver module written in C, not a CGI program, which ensures that it does its job very fast. All requests to the site are checked; it even protects requests for other modules, such as PHP. It has a configurable list of known offending spiders which are automatically intercepted on their first request.

Changes: This release adds a reports screen showing blocked spiders and user agents, the robots.txt file, and Apache configuration. You can look up info on the IPs of spiders on Samspade.org directly from the report, and unblock addresses that were trapped by mistake. Log filtering was added so caught spiders don't fill up your access log as they wander in the tarpit. A number of serious bugs were fixed.

The XML file format is that of the user interface builder GLADE, so libglade acts as an alternative to GLADE's code generation approach. Libglade also provides a simple interface for connecting handlers to the various signals in the interface (on platforms where the gmodule library works correctly, it is possible to connect all the handlers with a single function call). Once the interface has been instantiated, libglade gives no overhead, so other than the initial interface loading time (which is short), there is no performance tradeoff.

Changes: Bugs in the handling of GtkLayout were fixed. Support for wmclass_class/wmclass_name properties on windows was added.

 CDDB / CDDB_get 2.01 beta
by Armin Obersteiner - Monday, March 11th 2002 10:30 EST

About: The CDDB/CDDB_get Perl module gets the CDDB info for an audio cd.

Changes: The information can now be saved in xmcd format. An untested feature for loading data directly into a database was added. A data flag for each track was added. A fix was made for "/" characters in an artist's name. The HTTP proxy recognition was fixed. All entries are returned if a flag is set. An RPM spec file is now included. A command for encoding the CD with LAME is now output.

About: Libcwd is a full-featured, professional, well-documented library to support C++ developers with debugging their applications. It includes support for ostream-based debug output, custom debug channels and devices, powerful memory allocation debugging, run-time sourcefile:linenumber information, and demangled type names of variables. Libcwd is thread-safe.

Changes: Minor bugs were fixed in the documentation. An API change was made: the macros related to configure-options have been renamed.

 Emacs/LaTeX inline Preview 0.6.1
by David Kastrup - Monday, March 11th 2002 10:14 EST

About: The purpose of the preview-latex package is to embed LaTeX environments such as display math or figures into Emacs source buffers. By mouse clicking, you can open the original text. After editing, another click will just run the region in question through LaTeX and redisplay the new results. It requires version 21.1 or higher of Emacs and AUC TeX. XEmacs support is not yet finished.

Changes: The focus of this release focus has been user interface improvements and documentation. The TeXinfo documentation now contains instructions for the currently used LaTeX style, and users of Emacs' desktop package will have previews survive into their next Emacs session. The LaTeX style now has an option for making TeX bounding boxes known to Dvips in case it gets them wrong. Due to a defective backport of security handling, GNU GhostScript-6.53 failed to work with version 0.6. The incomplete functionality is no longer used.

 autopilot 2.2
by Tramm Hudson - Monday, March 11th 2002 09:41 EST

About: autopilot is a command and control system for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. It provides hands-off flight controls for helicopters and simple "moving map" control for the ground station. Manual control is similar to operation under IFR with three axis EFIS.

Changes: This release adds an OpenGL helicopter simulator for testing out the inertial measurement system (IMU) and for calibrating the attitude/heading reference (AHRS). The inertial data, either from the simulator or from the IMU on the real helicopter, feeds into a Kalman filter that can run on the ground station or on the realtime board.

 camserv 0.5.0
by Jon Travis - Monday, March 11th 2002 09:38 EST

About: Camserv is an extremely modular program for streaming video from your Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and BSDi machine to Web clients. Filters can be added for text on the displayed window and for anything else one wants to add. It's also very portable because of the modularity of the camera plugin modules, and includes a relay agent which allows the stream to be run more easily on low-bandwidth connections, masqueraded machines, and less-powerful machines. The relay agent can be connected to another relay agent for endless mirroring and paths.

Changes: This change includes patches from various contributors and numerous bugfixes in both the build and installation layouts. The gdk-pixbuf and imlib2 filters should now work properly.

 Warewulf 0.3
by Greg Kurtzer - Monday, March 11th 2002 08:58 EST

About: Warewulf is presently a distribution builder for the slave nodes in a cluster. The filesystem is written to a bootable ISO image that should be burned to a CDROM. The scope of the project consists of the slave node distribution builder, cluster management tools, and basic monitoring tools. These tools will allow you to run any Linux distribution, kernel, or cluster libraries that you wish. It also allows one to create "temporary" clusters using workstations without writing anything to the disks.

Changes: Several bugs in the breed script with regard to the building the initrd and running out of space were fixed. The warewulfd, wwjobs, and wwcontrol scripts were added. The binaries and libraries used in the boot-tree and initrd-tree were stripped. Configuration options were added to use any networking device.
