AutoSwish

AutoSwish: Automatic Index Creation

| QUICK FORM | INTERMEDIATE FORM | COMPLETE FORM | REINDEX | REMOVE | EDIT |

AutoSwish is a small application that works in conjunction with SWISH-E and allows you to index a Web site by simply filling out a form. AutoSwish will then automatically write your SWISH-E configuration file and index the directories and files you have specified. In just minutes your webpages are fully searchable!
AutoSwish is particularly useful if you only have FTP access to your website. (You do need to ask your ISP to install swish-e though)

A Demonstration

  To See AutoSwish in Action
  1. Just accept the defaults in either the quick, intermediate or complete form and press the GO SWISH-E button.
  2. Now follow the directions on each of the subsequent screens.
  3. After you're done, you can also try the index maintenance tools at the bottom of the page to re-index, edit or remove your index.
  4. That's all there is to it!

Work in Progress

  Changes Planned

  1. More use of the different Swish-e indexing methods, ie using PropertyNames and other Page elements
  2. "Background" indexing. Indexing currently times out when indexing very large documents (esp PDFs). This should be fixed by firing off the indexing process independently from the CGI process.
  3. A HTTP-Spider version
  4. Bugfixes that come up when people use it.
  5. Please let me know anything you encounter and would like changed.

Download and Installation

  Download AutoSwish

  1. choose either AutoSwish-1-0.zip or AutoSwish-1.0.tgz
  2. Unzip the archive file in some temporary location
  3. Move the "swish-bin" directory to your cgi-bin directory
  4. Move the "SWISH-E" directory to your webserver document root
  5. Create a Directory called "Swish-E" in some location (e.g. in your Home directory) and make it webserver writable.
  6. Edit the file "config.pl" in the swish-bin directory to reflect your file locations and other settings
  7. That should be it. Let me know if it doesn't work for you.
