OSF/DCE is IMO a developers tool kit (with some extensions) and is as is not useable for a system integrator/manager. OSF/DME is IMO _the_ product which makes a U**X deritative to a real and open/standard operating system. But unfortunately DME was dead before arrival so U**X is still ... OSF/DCE on VMS has also the problem that 1) DTS is not neccessary. DECdts was there for years and NTP is there too 2) CDS is not neccessary, DECdns and X.500/DAP was there for years and LDAP will be there soon 3) ACL are not new, they were all there for many years native in VMS 4) DFS is still not implemented (and LanMan is also now the defacto standard) DCE is dead in many forms. eg. My wife used to be a accredited OSF DCE trainer, but since years (IIRC since V1.2) there has been no interest for her classes. I know also of some DCE programs, but none of them did get created in the last say three years. Yes, OSF DCE should exist and be improved for OpenVMS (and it does) but don't expect a killer application for DCE. Only if LINUX gets DCE for free included things might change again, but I doubt (think of CDE vs KDE) -- Peter "EPLAN" LANGSTOEGER Tel. +43 1 81111-2651 Network and OpenVMS system manager Fax. +43 1 81111-888 <<< KAPSCH AG Wagenseilgasse 1 E-mail eplan@kapsch.net A-1121 VIENNA AUSTRIA "I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist"
