Below are the settings and some further information. Individual software packages have different ways of expressing some of these parameters; if there is doubt, we may be able to help with the particular package you are using. (*) You may get a different gateway address depending on which modem you reach. Many PC SLIP/PPP packages do not require that you configure the gateway address since it isn't necessary. With InterSLIP you may need to find a way to extract this information out of the dialog during the logon procedure. We encourage you to follow the mv newsgroups, particularly mv.forum.general and mv.forum.dialip for periodic information about happenings at MV. ==================== Using Electronic Mail via a DialIP account There are two ways to receive mail over SLIP/PPP. One is to set up an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) receiver on your system. This is a program that is always running, listening for incoming mail from other sites on the Internet. Anyone on the Internet who sends you mail will send mail directly to your receiver program without going through our system (other than the equipment that handles the SLIP/PPP account). If you aren't online at the time the mail is sent, however, the mail will go to a queue on our system, and you can make it be delivered the next time you log in. We can tell you how to do this if you choose to use this mail mechanism. The other way is the way most PC and individual SLIP/PPP users do it. You can set up one or more POP (Post Office Protocol) mailboxes on our system. When somebody sends mail to user@yoursite.mv.com, the mail arrives in this POP mailbox. When you connect via SLIP/PPP, you can use e.g. Eudora to access this mailbox and read the mail. With our SLIP/PPP accounts we can include 1 or 2 POP mailboxes without extra charge. Additional POP mailboxes are $2/month. % From: MV Administration
