From: STAR::PILLARELLI "Al - 381-6280 17-May-1996 0912" 17-MAY-1996 09:18:03.77 To: @DISTLIST:OPENVMS CC: PILLARELLI Subj: FINAL Update for Spring (St. Louis) DECUS This memo is intended as confirmation of the Spring (St.Louis) DECUS sessions, tradeshow and campground participation from OSSG. We entered the planning phase of the Spring DECUS with a very distinct set of goals: * Attract DECUS members/attendees to OpenVMS speaker sessions, tradeshow demos, and the campground and pursuade them to accept, resell, recommend, and/or use OpenVMS products. * DECUS formed an "Architectual Committee" for overall design. Session streams were formed to address specific needs of the DECUS population. Those "architected streams" were: * Application Development * System Management * Migration * Emerging Technologies * Network Management * Internet Access * PC Software * Due to a number of economic factors, the Spring DECUS was designed to be a smaller event than, say, San Francisco was. * Total sessions were reduced from nearly 500 to ~300. * Fall DECUS had 19 session rooms; reduced to 10 rooms. * OSSG sessions were reduced from ~70 sessions to 55. * OSSG personnel reduced by 30%; reduced to 43 people. * Campground equipment costs were reduced by 46%. * Tradeshow floor space was reduced by 68%. You may find, as you review the enclosed lists, that a session (or tradeshow demo or campground activity) you had submitted/supported is not included as a result of the tactics identified above. Every attempt was made to balance OSSG's desire to deliver information with the expressed requirements of the DECUS community; while, at the same time, addressing our own requirement to reduce our manpower and financial commitment for this particular event. For those of you who are scheduled to give DECUS session presentations, The deadline for submitting your talk to DECUS is now May 24th. The suggested software for submitting your session notes is Microsoft's Powerpoint. You can submit your session notes to DECUS in one of three ways: * Anonymous FTP -- FTP to DECUS.ORG with user name anonymous and password "STLOUISNOTES". Then send mail to SUBMISSIONS@DECUS.ORG with your name, phone # and file name. * E-Mail to SUBMISSIONS@DECUS.ORG * Floppy Mailer -- you probably already received a pre-addressed floppy mailer; just enclose a diskette and mail it back. DOCD$:[DECUS.SPRING96] has been created on star. Please place a copy of your presentation in this directory in addition to submitting to DECUS. DEMO & CLINIC Topic: Affinity Application Developer's Package for C++ Requestor: Gaitan D'Antoni Abstract: The Affinity Application Developer's Package for C++ is a package of software, documentation and examples that will allow software developers to develop client/server applications in C and C++ on WindowsNT systems for deployment on OpenVMS. Developers will be able to use the WindowsNT development tools such as Visual C++ to develop OpenVMS client/server applications. DEMO Topic: Internet Protocol Next Generation (IPv6) Prototype Requestor: Allen Kerr Abstract: Digital has been a key contributor to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) effort to develop standards for the internet protocol next generation (IPv6). This demo is an actual prototype of an IPv6 implementation on OpenVMS and on Digital UNIX. Included in the prototype are demonstrations of IPv6 addressing, application API's and transition mechanisms. DEMO Topic: DECnet/OSI & TCP/IP Integration on OpenVMS Requestor: Allen Kerr Abstract: The explosion of the internet has caused a need to integrate OpenVMS DECnet environments with TCP/IP. Many OpenVMS users must preserve their investment in DECnet applications while establishing TCP/IP as their network backbone. This demo shows how Digital's DECnet/OSI and TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS can be utilized to meet these needs. The ability to run existing DECnet applications, unchanged, over TCP/IP is a highlight of this demo. DEMO Topic: DECnet Phase IV to DECnet/OSI Upgrade Requestor: Allen Kerr Abstract: DECnet/OSI provides OpenVMS users with new functionality such as the ability to run DECnet applications over TCP/IP and Large Local File namespace. This demo shows how the upgrade to DECnet/OSI from DECnet Phase IV can be done easily and quickly. Namespace conversion and the NCP emulator are also demonstrated. DEMO Topic: IBM Interconnect Products Requestor: Brian Ota and Sue Skonetski Abstract: Various IBM Interconnect products will be demonstrated. Visitors will see and use the Rhumba products to connect through a Digital Gateway into an IBM mainframe or an AS/400 and, using OLE Common Objects, transfer objects back and forth between applications in a Windows95 or NT desktop environment.
