Subj:	Re: copies of US Symposium tapes for Australia

Glenn,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.

I was aware that Paul probably received the tapes, but didn't
realise Geoff also received a copy. Unfortunately the visible
signs of active tape coping are often hard to detect (especially
true if you are not on the tree).

I certainly appreciate your effort and the cost of your "labour of love."
Unfortunately I do not believe the tapes are being widely copied
in Australia at present. There have been a number of changes in
DECUS Leadership, and even changes in the DEC userbase.

DECUS in Australia has just re-organised its Library function to
focus on aspects such a tape copy and software sourcing from the
internet etc etc. Its early days but all the signs are that it will
be significantly better than we were last year. The Librarians are
also listed within DECUS as "Media Masters" - which means they provide
tape translation facilities for DECUS members "gratus"!!. Infact one
of our Librarians recently chased the most recent version of Pavlin's
Ethermon off the Internet for a DECUS member who had found his
VAX/L&T version couldn't work at VMS 5.5...

I am loath to ask you to send the tapes to an individual because
experience suggests we don't always provide a replacement name
when we move from the copy chain. Anything sent to the DECUS
office attention Chairman Library committee will automatically go
to the current chief Media Master - and so start off the chain of copies.

I would not like to see the process of copy distribution broken.
However with the pace of technology and social change who can
guarantee to be willing and able to continue doing a favour at say
this time next year!

If you could I would appreciate the tapes being sent to:

	Chapter Administrator,
	DECUS Australia
	Locked Bag 16
	Concord West
	NSW 2138 AUSTRALIA

	ATTENTION: CHAIRMAN, LIBRARY COMMITTEE

If that causes a problem then please feel free to send to me

	Ron Reinhard
	GPO BOX 3658
	DARWIN NT 0801 AUSTRALIA

and I will send you a replacement address when I am no longer
Director, Library. The Board reallocates portfolios every January
for the following year; and Library Committee members and Board members
serve for a two year term - with half retiring each year (December).

On a different issue you mentioned the desirability of DECUS chapters
exchanging submissions for Symposium Collection Tapes. At our last
Symposium we mastered a CD ROM Collection in real time (ie mastered
on the exhibition floor during the symposium). The CD ROM is dual mastered
ie Files 11 and ISO 9660 formated partitions. Mastering and copying
was done by DEC Software Manufacturing (Australia is one of the 3
world software manufacturing centres in DEC). I'll arrange for a copy
to be sent to you if you wish.

We propose to master CD ROMs at all future symposiums. Our first
effort forgot the DECUSLIB directory. Future CD ROM may contain
PS files of session hand outs etc. Our major problem is getting a
Library Catalogue Number reserved so we can burn the catalogue number
onto the CD ROM cover and also use it at the volume label. I would
appreciate any help with this project.

This is a bit longer than I intended... Sorry to ramble on.

Regards

Ron Reinhard
