I'd sincerely like to thank all the people who answered! I'd also like to apologize to those folks who I offended by my comment, "please respond by e-mail; I don't frequently read this group" I didn't realize that was such an inflammatory statement and I will not likely make it again. One person requested a summary and I'm happy to oblige. The following is a selection from the responses I received. From grant@flipper.Miami.EDU Fri Jul 13 12:43:19 1990 Chaim: got it via anonymous ftp at addvax.llnl.gov This is emacs version 18.55 (current) for vms 5.x If you have vms5.3-1, the xwindows stuff will work. From xberri%europa.decnet@arecibo.aero.org Fri Jul 13 13:33:12 1990 Try anonymous ftp from "ctrsci.cc.utah.edu" (I don't know the ip number off hand). I ftp'd gnuemacs 18.55 from there and it works great. Take a look at the readme files on the machine for more information. From catone@dsl.cis.upenn.edu Fri Jul 13 17:09:23 1990 By the way, the entire emacs backup set is huge, like 55,000 blocks or something; then you need to append all the parts together, and change the blocksize, and unback it. The instructions are clear, but plan on having 60 megs or so of disk space. If you don't have that, we can get together and ftp the individual directories from Wharton, which takes much less space ( < 15 megs, I believe). From BRAND@addvax.llnl.gov Fri Jul 13 17:33:18 1990 Try ADDVAX.LLNL.GOV via anonymous ftp. EMACS1855-VMS.BCK is a BACKUP saveset of EMACS 18.55 for VMS (with DIRED but no DECWindows support). EMACS1855-VMS-DECWINDOWS.BCK supports DECWindows (VMS 5.3 for sure, earlier possibly??). They are BIG savesets - about 17 Mbytes each. Suggest you just get one (obviously, the one with DECWindows support is a superset of the other!) From BEEBE@science.utah.edu Fri Jul 13 19:43:14 1990 ctrsci.math.utah.edu has GNU Emacs 18.55 under VAX VMS 5.2 and 5.3 for anonymous ftp. The 00readme.txt file gives details. From MIKE@cisco.nosc.mil Mon Jul 16 13:24:24 1990 GNU Emacs Popular screen-oriented editor. Runs on a variety of computers. Developed at MIT. Availability: F4, F5 (COMPRESSED VMS-BACKUP FILE), F6 MG, formerly MicroGnuEmacs, is a smaller version of GNU emacs, and is available from: F17 (in pub/mg2a.tar.Z).
