To: INFO-VAX@KL.SRI.COM X-Vms-To: @INFO-VAX 3100 users/managers - learn from my experience: Got an MI-clustered 3100 with DECWindows running on it? Want to be super- efficient and use its local disk for USER data, not only for PAGE/SWAP? Of course this is possible, and even recommended. What would be more natural than assigning the logical name "LOCAL" to that drive? Of course, a cautious System Manager would check very carefully that this logical name is not already assigned... and indeed it is not. So he (i.e. ME) does assign it, and everything works beautifully. ALAS, next time the 3100 boots... DECWindows would not come up properly. Check again... and sure enough, $ SHOW LOGICAL DECW$* yields ..... (DECW$LOGICAL_NAMES) ..... "DECW$SERVER_TRANSPORTS" = "DECNET" = "LOCAL" ..... SO... Be smart... Be efficient... BUT DO NOT CALL IT "LOCAL"! Any other name, e.g. "LOCALDISK", would do fine. More hints about the 3100: o The CLUSTER_CONFIG default page-file size is 10000 blocks. THIS IS NOT ENOUGH! If you experience 3100 hangs, increase this size to 30000 or more (to do this, you must use CLUSTER_CONFIG to REMOVE the node, then recreate it with the larger page-file size). o The default SYSGEN parameters for a 3100 are not appropriate for even the most basic use of DECWindows. No reason not to adjust them via AUTOGEN! I found the following values appropriate for an 8MB machine: MIN_NPAGEDYN = 1050000 MIN_SRPCOUNT = 1500 MIN_IRPCOUNT = 700 o No reason not to define a local BATCH queue on the 3100! Do this, select CPU-bound jobs to run on it locally, using its local disk drive... Then lean back and enjoy! THEN get a calculator and start doing your homework as per what VAX to buy next... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was a PERSONAL view of: Eli Shkedi Who happens to work as a: VAXCluster System Manager At: INTeL Electronics, Jerusalem, Israel --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
