Anyway, here is the promised summary of the list of lists and the list of FTP sites. For BITNET users, a list of discussion groups is available from "listserv@marist" by sending the commands "get arpanet groups1" through "get arpanet groups7". The first part contains an index, the others contain detailed descriptions of the groups. Be warned, however: these files are *HUGE*. Get them all only if you must -- there are hundreds of groups, with discussion topics ranging from AIDS research to Zmodem. I think MARIST also has an Internet connection, so it should be possible for Internet users to get this list as well (I am not 100% sure, however). FTP site lists are available from: scam.berkeley.edu (SEE_ALSO) (* Internet *) uxe.cso.uiuc.edu (filename unknown) (* Internet *) listserv@unmvm ("get internet library") (* BITNET *) In addition, I have made my own FTP site list from the replies I received. If you would like a copy, send a SINGLE LINE message containing your network address (@. for Internetters, @ for BITNETters) and subject "Request for FTP site list" to the address in my signature. It's quite a large list, so I am not posting it to the net. BE PATIENT! I'm very busy, what with finals, etc., and may not be able to attend to your requests for a week or so. Many thanks to all who replied. Rahul Mangaldas. BITNET: rmangaldas@clarku Internet: rmangaldas@clarku.bitnet Disclaimer: I am supplying these lists as is and make no warranties, express or implied. (Your state may grant you specific legal rights blah-de-blah...whoosh...pouah!). -------------------------------- P.S.: Will the antagonists in the Unix vs. VMS war going on right now on INFO-VAX please take their f***ing crap elsewhere? I'm tired of running out of disk quota only to find it's being taken up by the ramblings of some Unix or VMS zealot (idiot?). Discuss this in private, if you must. Don't send a zillion page message to INFO-VAX. As it is, the signal-to-noise ratio of INFO-VAX is pretty low. Why the hell do you think the INFO-VAX moderators put out the monthly posting on network etiquette? Read it, damn it, and follow the guidlines. Also, just because some John in Timbuktu wants to know whether he can use his VAX to control his electrofantasmagic ice cream maker doesn't mean the rest of the net is interested; if you have an answer, post it *DIRECTLY* to the guy who asked the question. And to the guys who ask the questions: post summaries. We're in this together -- let's have some discipline and co-operation: for all our sakes.
