Subject: DECwindows hint - getting rid of blinking cursor from login screen To: info-vax@kl.sri.com X-Vms-To: IN%"info-vax@kl.sri.com" If you're using a big VAX to paint the "DIGITAL/login" banner on small VAXstations, you may have noticed that an idle workstation eats up about 2/100ths of a CPU second every elapsed second. Why is it doing this on an otherwise unused system? Well, look at the cursor, and you'll see. That's right, the blink-blink-blink of the cursor is controlled by your bigger VAX system, to the tune of two invert pixmap operations every second. Now, on a big VAX you probably don't care, but if you do, here's how you can make the blink go away: In DECW$SYSTEM_DEFAULTS:DECW$LOGIN.DAT, insert the following line virtually anywhere (near the top is good): *blinkRate:0 jms Joel M Snyder, U Arizona MIS Dep't, Tucson, AZ, 85721 Phone: 602.621.2748 BITNET: jms@arizmis Internet: jms@mis.arizona.edu SPAN: 47541::uamis::jms "The only real fiction these days," writes Hamlet, "is meta-fiction."
