Well, I've been working on something like that. The best part is that it almost works! I'm looking for people to help me test it out. If you're willing to help me out by sending me any bug reports, or are even willing just to give it a whirl and see how it goes, get a copy. This version of TALK is compatible with BSD 4.3 talk. It does not at this time have support for the BSD 4.2 packet formats. That may be added at a later date depending on possible complexities. The bad news is that there is *no* documentation at this point. The good news is that it is VMSINSTALable. (It doesn't mention that you need to include in your system startup, after TCP/IP has been started, a line like like @SYS$STARTUP:TALK_STARTUP to start the Talk Server process.) Anyway, if you'd like to get a copy, you can FTP it (TALK000.A) from DRYCAS.CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU using standard Anonymous FTP. (Remember to use /STRUCTURE=PAGE.) If you are on Bitnet, drop me a note and I'll send it to you /VMSDUMP. Once you install it, I'd appreciate a piece of mail just to know who (and how many) is running it. That way I'll have a better idea of how well it's getting tested. And, as I said before, I'd appreciate any bug reports and/or fixes, too. --Marc Shannon Computer Club Carnegie-Mellon University (A sample installation follows for the curious.
