There is a bug in the TUDRIVER for VMS 4.6 and 4.7 that causes bad blocks
on the tape to generate "Tape position lost" messages (which are terminal of
course). This problem manifested itself here when we got our VS3500 running
VMS4.7A with a TK70. After building the system I was unable to do a standalone
backup because of this error.
 A software patch is available from field service - it was originally 
distributed to our office around 19 January. Note that this problem affects 
TU81+ drives too, although it seems to be more accute on TK70's because they
generate more errors.
 If you can't get the patch then let me know and I'll send you a copy.
