I will not stand for this. Dale, you are utterly off base and out of line on this one. For the record, here's what really happened: Just after VMS V4 came out (1985) I was looking for a better pseudo terminal (PTY) driver to use with the Tektronix TCP/IP (yes folks, the one CMU started with sometime later and is now distributing) which I had just finished porting from V3 to V4. A friend of mine told me that Symbolics was using a PTY in their ChaosNet distribution for VAX/VMS. They included the source to the device drivers. Dale Moore's name was in the code as an author and contributor. I sent Dale a message asking about the drivers. He told me that he was one of the authors. I asked him if he would consider putting the code in the public domain since there was significant interest in it. Here is Dale's response: ------------------------------------------------------------------- From: UUCP%"cit-vax!DM51@CMU-CS-A.ARPA" 5-AUG-1985 10:03:26.28 To: engvax!kvc CC: Subj: ptydriver Received: from cit-vax.UUCP by engvax.UUCP with VMS/UUCP; Mon, 5 Aug 85 10:03:22 PDT Received: from CMU-CS-A.ARPA (cmu-cs-a.arpa.ARPA) by cit-vax.ARPA id AA18934 at Mon, 5 Aug 85 09:02:24 pdt Date: Mon, 5 Aug 85 11:09 EDT From: cit-vax!Dale.Moore@CMU-CS-A.ARPA To: engvax!kvc Subject: ptydriver Message-Id: <05Aug85.110947.DM51@CMU-CS-A.ARPA> I just talked to my boss. He said there would be no problem in putting the vms pseudo terminal driver in the public domain. I have no objections to putting it in public domain. So I declare it to be in public domain. Why don't you put a public domain notice in the sources? Also, we want to encourage that folks put their mods to this software in the public domin as well. From the looks of the comments that you sent me, You started with the same version that I currently have. I've played around with my version over the weekend. I beleive that I could make use of your fixes. I'll send you what documentation I have, just give me time to spruce it up for V4. Some the stuff that I currently have in the documentation is definitly dated to VMS V3. dale ------------------------------------------------------------------- DEC is using the public domain drivers I've been distributing for years. They have modified it somewhat, but I've tracked their mods and included them in my distributions. The fact that the DECwindows driver is nearly identical to what I've been distributing (and which I sent to Dale last summer -- telling him that DEC was using it) is a surprise to no one. DEC can incorporate public domain code anytime they like. /Kevin Carosso kvc@friday.a-t.com Innosoft International Inc. kvc@ymir.bitnet
