Locke" To: Info-DEC-Micro Subject: Announcement of the Files Archive AAREADME.1ST 05/22/89 Welcome to the Info-DEC-Micro File Archives. The files contained here may be retreived through anonymous ftp or through requests to have them mailed (for those of you without Internet/Arpanet access). A list of the available files is in AAAFILES.TXT. Anonymous FTP Access -------------------- Info-DEC-Micro maintains a directory on Drycas.Club.CC.CMU.EDU (128.2.232.11). The machine is a VAXstation 3100 running VMS 5.1B. The directory containing the archives is [ANONYMOUS.INFO-DEC-MICRO]. The actual files are located in nine subdirectories off of that one: [.ARC] Archiving utilities. [.COMM] Communcation programs. [.MSDOS] Programs/utilities for MS-DOS. [.CPM] Programs/utilities for CP/M. [.GAMES] Games. [.PROG] Programming/source code. [.DIGESTS] Digests of Info-DEC-Micro correspondence. [.TEXT] Text files of interest. [.UPLOADS] User submissions not yet processed. To move around from directory to directory within ftp, one uses the CD command. To move down a directory, simply precede the directory with a period as done above. To move up one directory, use [-]. In the main directory, [ANONYMOUS.INFO-DEC-MICRO], along with this file, there is a file called AAAFILES.TXT which contains a listing of all of the files in all of the directories (except, of course, [.UPLOADS]). Binary files (almost all of the files available) require that you set the TYPE to IMAGE or BINARY. Please see your local documentation for more information on using ftp. File Request via Mail Messages ------------------------------ For those people who do not have Arpanet/Internet access, and, consequently, cannot use ftp, there is an alternate, albeit slower, method for obtaining the files. It is via mail. To send a request for a particular file or for a list of the available files, send a message to the appropriate following address: from Arpanet: Info-DEC-Micro-Files@andrew.cmu.edu from Bitnet : Info-DEC-Micro-Files@ANDREW or Info-DEC-Micro-Files%andrew.cmu.edu@CMCCVB from UUCP : {favorite gateway}!andrew.cmu.edu!info-dec-micro-files In the message, if you ask to see a list of the files available, you receive a mail message with the file AAAFILES.TXT included in the text of the message. If you ask for a specific binary file, you will receive multiple messages which are pieces of the file uuencoded. To work with these files that you receive, you will need the following tools: 1) An editor to remove the mail's headers and footers. 2) A file transfer package to get the file(s) to your PC. 3) UUDECODE to change the files back into an archive. 4) PKZIP v0.92 to extract the files from the archives. All of these are available from the Info-DEC-Micro File Archives. Since some of these are needed from the beginning, please send some mail requesting some help and telling me which of the above you have so I can see what I can arrange for you to get you set up using the archives. User Submissions to the Archive ------------------------------- The Info-DEC-Micro File Archives will not survive without your support. Many of the programs available in the archives are still being updated. Since I do this voluntarily, I cannot both help people and search around for the new versions. Since I feel it is more important for me to help people accessing Info-DEC-Micro, it is up to you to update the files available. There are essentially two methods for submitting files to the archive. The first method is to make the file available to me via ftp in some manner. Send mail to Info-DEC-Micro-Files@andrew.cmu.edu with the name of the file and its location (please include the IP address of the machine). Please plan to leave the file available for a few days as I might not get your message immediately and may run into some difficulties in gaining access to your machine. I will notify you when I have successfully retrieved the file and you can then remove it/my access. The second method for making a submission is to mail the file to Info-DEC-Micro-Files either electronically or via USMail. If you do so via the the networks, please uuencode the file first to make sure it is not destroyed by one of the mailers between us. If you decide to send the file to me via USMail, I will only return the diskette if you also send me a return envelope with sufficient postage. --Rob Locke Info-DEC-Micro List/File Maintainer ------- Arpanet: rl1b+@andrew.cmu.edu USNail : 53 Echo Drive North Bitnet : rl1b@ANDREW (mail only) Darien, CT 06820 Fidonet: Rob Locke (1:129/15) USA [ end of AAREADME.1ST }
