I'm trying to use it to control an intelligent switch by doing a SET HOST/DTE TTA2: which works fine until I try to disconnect from the Intelligent switch. It requires a BREAK for disconnection and I have yet to find out how to generate one. The commands specified in the on-line help for SET HOST/DTE do not work for me. Is it possible? If so, how do I do it? Bruce Baker. I have since had the definitive answer from Jim Kovac after the Workstation Product update. Basically there are no smarts in the serial ports on a VAXstation. I'm afraid my hardware is NOT capable of generating a BREAK regardless of the SET HOST/DTE command interface. ================================================================================ Note 3.0 Pathworks Form Feed on Printing Problem 4 replies TEMBEL::JOHNSONS24 10 lines 19-AUG-1991 16:51 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does anyone have a solution to the problem of printing from DOS PC over Pathworks redirected LPT ports to a network printer, whereby I am getting a blank page after EVERY print job. This occurs on any packages to Impact/Gestetner Laser printers which are emulating Epson FX100 printers. The VMS print queues are stock std, running with no forms, with the printers attached to termianl servers under xon/xoff protocol. Does Pathworks send down a form feed at the end of each print job, can this be stopped. This extra page does not occur if the PC is hardwired direct to the Laser printer. ================================================================================ Note 3.1 Pathworks Form Feed on Printing Problem 1 of 4 TEMBEL::MCINTOSHR2 8 lines 19-AUG-1991 18:30 -< FF's are a "feature" of VMS >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a "feature" of the VMS print symbiont. When it sees any characters it thinks might be printable, it attempts to print them and form feed the page. There is a patch for LATSYM available off the Internet if you access (via SMIFFY). Otherwise I think it is fixed in the next release of PathWorks :-( ================================================================================ Note 3.2 Pathworks Form Feed on Printing Problem 2 of 4 TEMBEL::NOSWORTHYD22 7 lines 20-AUG-1991 08:50 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are using the Pathworks print facility to print to LPT2 (an Impact Laser printer - rebadged TI 2115) but the laser is a postscript unit. We don't have the problem you have indicated when printing to this unit and our queues are 'stock standard' Denis Nosworthy ================================================================================ Note 3.3 Pathworks Form Feed on Printing Problem 3 of 4 TEMBEL::JOHNSONS24 5 lines 20-AUG-1991 11:07 -< Postscript not a problem >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quite correct, we also have Postscripts and these do not cause problems. It is only the Impact laser running Epson FX100 or Hplaserjet that are causing the extra page feeds. Has anyone implemented this? I guess something like FAL running on the PC would be used. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is running DECwrite most of the time. The symptoms that I see are that all windowing activity, select, pull down etc. slows, stops, and may resume again a few minutes later. Examination of the SYS$MANAGER:DECW$*.LOG files reveals nothing. I can connect via LAT to the VAXstation, and from a VMS point of view, nothing is happening: - No processes in an abnormal state - No paging - No computable processes AUTOGEN does not suggest any major changes to my parameters. Anyone have any ideas? Where should I be looking? ================================================================================ Note 5.1 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 1 of 13 PENCEL::DEMO 1 line 20-AUG-1991 10:33 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you checked for system things like SRP, IRP, LRP exhaustion? ================================================================================ Note 5.2 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 2 of 13 TEMBEL::JOHNSONS24 26 lines 20-AUG-1991 11:17 -< VWS Problem the Same >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are also running VAXstation 3100's models 30 and 76 with the VWS window system and a fortran written 3d graphics package. We to are having the "sleeping sickness" as our draftsmen call it!! The VAx's go to sleep for 30sec upto 2 mins with NOTHING at all happening. We were told by DEC UK that it was to do with the VWS window system and that we needed to upgrade our s/w to DECwindows to solve the problem. This is of real concern to us if the problem exits under DECwindows aswell! DEC have logged onto our system from Tele Support and have no solution. All VMS quotas look OK. Our software developers believe that the problem is related to using more than one graphics plane under VWS. Thus is the drafties keep to only one screen view, (pretty difficult way to work) that the "sleeping disease" does not occur. Limited trials of this seem to confirm this. Any other people with solutions?? Shane Johnson ================================================================================ Note 5.3 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 3 of 13 VAXNET::KOSTENM19 5 lines 20-AUG-1991 15:20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just to forestall further discussion on this: There is a parameter you can change with ncp (on the pc) that can alleviate this problem. I have it back in my hotel room and will post it either later today or Thursday. ================================================================================ Note 5.4 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 4 of 13 TEMBEL::BEISSELC15 "Craig Beissel Coles Myer Ltd." 10 lines 20-AUG-1991 16:07 -< Re 5.1 - SRPs, IRPs and LRPs >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re 5.1 I have not looked at LRPs, but AUTOGEN with feedback does not significatly change IRPs and SRPs, so I believe that they are OK. Roll on v5.4 and feedback on LRP usage. P.S. did I tell you that this VAXcluster (4000/300, 3800, VAXstation 3100/30 *2) is running VMS v5.3-2. Just thought that you would like to know. ================================================================================ Note 5.5 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 5 of 13 TEMBEL::WHALANA25 5 lines 20-AUG-1991 18:51 -< A Patch May Help ( It May Not Be A Panacea ) >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had the same problem with VMS 5.3-1 . I contacted DEC TSC and they had a patch which at least alleviated the problem. It could be a possible tuning problem ( I was running a badly tuned 3100/30 with 8 MB and retuning the machine sorted things out ). If you want more information call back. ================================================================================ Note 5.6 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 6 of 13 TEMBEL::BEISSELC15 "Craig Beissel Coles Myer Ltd." 1 line 20-AUG-1991 19:17 -< More details thanks >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks 5.5, more deatils would be appreciated. ================================================================================ Note 5.7 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 7 of 13 TEMBEL::WHALANA25 4 lines 22-AUG-1991 17:03 -< Some More Details That May Help >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The patch was for VS3100's with an SPX board under VMS 5.3-1. I'm trying to find out the details from the TSC Digit who handled my call ( Robert O'Meley ) ( OMELEYR22 ) and hopefully he will get back to either of us. ================================================================================ Note 5.8 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 8 of 13 TEMBEL::JOHNSONS24 10 lines 22-AUG-1991 18:06 -< vmw 5.4 and vws >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- please ignore Marks comment in 5.3 as he thought this NOTE was about a PC version. The problem we have with the Windows sleeping is with VMS 5.4 and VWS windows. We don't use the SPX board, just the std 8 plane colour system!! I am sure with have checked lrp, srp etc and all look OK Shane Johnson ================================================================================ Note 5.9 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 9 of 13 VAXNET::OMELEYR22 "Never mind the answer... what's the question" 32 lines 23-AUG-1991 08:46 -< Try this, then perhaps the patches >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok guy's... the good oil is: VMS V5.3-* and the SPX platform had some initial problems. These manifested themselves as DECW$SERVER_n processes unceremoniously exitting. The server never recovered, necessitating an @sys$manager:decw$startup. These problems were ultimately addressed in the V5.4-1 update (from memory). So I doubt that this is Craigs problem. From memory though I sent Andrew a kit for the session manager that stopped a bytlm "leak". This problem was typified on workstations that have their sessions "Paused" rather than logged out, resulting in a gradual slo-w--i---n----g of the applications, and in the case of DECTerms, the decw$te_n process failing. This may be the problem you are seeing. I'd suggest going to V5.4-2 ASAP (or give the CSC a call for the kit). Failing all this start having a look at resource usage on the Session Manager, the decw$te_n and the one running DECWrite (as well as the Server process). These should point the way to what is going wrong. You may also try starting DECWrite from a DECTerm or Batch job rather than from the session manager. If you are already doing this and you are running the DECWrite client on the X-Server node (ie: all on the one workstation) make sure you are using the LOCAL transport rather than the default (from SET DISPLAY/CREATE) DECNet. Cheers Rob Sydney CSC ================================================================================ Note 5.10 DECwindows hangs - where do I look? 10 of 13 VAXNET::OMELEYR22 "Never mind the answer... what's the question" 25 lines 23-AUG-1991 09:04 -< Try this, but I need more info... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .2 Shane you omitted VWS version and VMS version, but the Model 76 gave it away ! I'll assume your running VMS V5.4-2 and VWS V4.3 (both the latest). A few places to look. Check that VWS has "ample" memory (refer to the installation guide for the recommendations on this... err on the large-ish side for starters). I have not seen this "sleeping sickness" and would suggest that there are quite possibly other issues here, namely system tuning. VWS builds a display list in paged memory, which is typically flushed when you exit the program. Depending on the complexity of the drawing this can take a few seconds as the display list is walked and the elements removed. When are your users seeing the sleeping ? Also have a look at the VWS display manager process and see if it is running low on anything. How committed is your page file.. VWS applications benefit from a big pagefile, large VIRTUALPGCNT and process PGFLQUOTA. Review these areas and get back to us... or wander up to the CSC stand today for a yarn. With a 386 and DOS5/Netroom/Qemm it is possible to do so with still a usable amount of conventional memory left. The process requires only a little file editing and appending and appears to work very well. I assume that this ability will be included in a future Pathworks release given the popularity of Ultrix servers and the cost of having all your servers running decnet and/or Tcp/Ip just so each PC can access all services provided. The process is a little lengthy to type, so I will list it only if there is a use for it. ================================================================================ Note 9.1 Decnet Tcp/ip simultaneous connections 1 of 4 TEMBEL::NOSWORTHYD22 8 lines 20-AUG-1991 16:17 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes I believe it would be worthwhile knowing the procedure.
