I am a project manager in a commercial finance industry environment. Our development tools are COBOL, LSE, CMS, PCA, DTM and our corporate database is RDB. We have a total of about 30 people working in several teams on basically development although this is soon to swing more to a maintenance role. I need to be able to justify up front to my management that if they were to spent 'x' dollars and get everyone workstations then we would be 'y'% more productive and that this returns the capital outlay in 'z' months (I'm also an optimist!). I've talked to a couple of people and they say 'sure you are more productive' but it's always a feeling not a fact. Has anyone out there actually done the sums and if so are you willing to share the results? Thanks, Ted ================================================================================ Note 2.1 Justifying Workstations... 1 of 3 VAXNET::LINTONP12 16 lines 20-AUG-1991 17:03 -< Flood them with reasons >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just installed some workstations for developers working with Rally and Rdb. The justification was done with hand waving as part of a large upgrade to our production cluster. Basically I didn't just argue that programmer productivity would improve but also that : - Developers are far and away the single largest load on the cluster and it is cheaper to provide their CPU cycles in workstations then as part of a 6xxx. - There should be less production down time for installation of new versions of products because we can test them out on workstations first. - It is more secure to have the developers totally separated from the production data. I didn't believe this but management went for it. Sorry I cannot help with costings or the like but fortunately I was spared that pain. ================================================================================ Note 2.2 Justifying Workstations... 2 of 3 VAXNET::GARNERR30 "Whale Oil Beef Hooked" 13 lines 22-AUG-1991 12:16 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a body of literature on this stuff ... can't quite remember where. Keith Anderson, who is on the Case demo gear *does* know, so try hassling him. I would also like to know how to convince management to buy workstations. I tried for a long time, and ran up against the "play pen" attitude that "you only want windows because they're toys" (I'm in system management). Whenever I pointed out that I was using 10 sessions on my LAT port, and that my productivity (and people around me) was suffering (spending 10 minutes per hour trying to figure out which LAT session was which), it did nothing. Maybe hypnosis is the answer ... :-) ================================================================================ Note 2.3 Justifying Workstations... 3 of 3 VAXNET::THORNEW29 8 lines 23-AUG-1991 11:09 -< Sorry I have no data >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ted, Sorry I cannot help you. I agree that people are more productive but no we did not do the sums before obtaining (note careful choice of word) our one Vaxstation. We have not really used it as a Vaxstation - so we have no statistical material.
