We are committed to workstations but have a small window of opportunity to purchase PC's running eXcursions instead. The PC configuration would be something like :- 486/50 v. high res 19" monitor lots of memory lots of disk (200Mb min) The work would be normal commercial development but with project management tasks also. For this we are looking at DECPlan vs MS-PROJECT. However we are very concerned re: the rollup/consolidation capabilities (or lack there of) of MS-PROJECT. All comments welcomed, Thanks, Ted ================================================================================ Note 2.1 Workstation vs PC/eXcursion 1 of 2 WHYNO::links 4 lines 24-AUG-1992 18:30 -< Have look at the 19" screen/DECpc at the PC stand >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You should have a look at the 486 DECpc with large screen at the PC stand. It is very impressive running eXcursion, and more than adequate as a 'real' workstation. I wouldn't mind one! ================================================================================ Note 2.2 Workstation vs PC/eXcursion 2 of 2 OPNNET::PENINGTONA27 6 lines 26-AUG-1992 12:41 -< Some minor Gotchas with eXcursion. >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One thing you will have to watch when using eXcursion is keyboard mapping. The supplied DECterm keyboard map does not have function keys above f10 (apart from HELP and DO). This can be a nuisance with applications that want say f20. You have to do your own mappings. These are complicated by the DECterm not recognising shifted function keys! ================================================================================ Note 3.0 VAXstation 4000/VLC SIMMS 10 replies OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 9 lines 25-AUG-1992 15:05 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone know any good suppliers of SIMMs for VAXstation 4000/VLC's? I'm about to take delivery of my minimally configured VLC (8Mb), and I'm sure I'll want more, and Digital's price is not "near" the prices I have heard from elsewhere... Did so. Interesting. > Perfect time to haggle. Funny, most of them wanted to get back to me later... Average price was around 30% of DEC list price; maybe I'm missing something? Anyone got some *real* experiences with this? Their USA price was $2,500 (VISA card docket left in by mistake), so at these rates, DEC Australia have a HUGH markup (A$13,200 list). ================================================================================ Note 3.8 VAXstation 4000/VLC SIMMS 8 of 10 OPNNET::BEGGJ17 "Jeremy Begg, VSM Software Services" 17 lines 27-AUG-1992 10:07 -< Happy with XSI/Camminton on my VS3100 >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know about VLCs (very nice little machine, though) but I do own a VAXstation 3100 Model 30. Until recently it had the standard 8Mb and was rather slow at times; VMS V5.4-3 helped but still not wonderful. On June 30th (note the date) I installed a 24Mb Caminton memory board from XSI. ERIC the half-a-VAX now has 32Mb of memory and is quite nice to use. Lots of free space... XSI were very good. I rang them on Thursday enquiring if they could deliver by Tuesday; they thought not, but offered a reasonable discount to tempt me. I took the bait and they delivered on Monday (30th). The local XSI person was around the next day to collect my money! We both wanted an end-of-FY deal and both were happy. The price? About $3500 including S/T. About $10K vs $27K, from memory. Plus its got lifetime guarantee (Clearpoint). Had a problem with it a few months ago (single-bit correctable), and Comperex replaced it free. ================================================================================ Note 3.10 VAXstation 4000/VLC SIMMS 10 of 10 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 3 lines 27-AUG-1992 10:35 -< Ta >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for all the replies so far; they have been enlightening... Don't stop talking about it though... ;-) ================================================================================ Note 4.0 Display to SUN of Dec GKS No replies OPNNET::PENINGTONA27 9 lines 26-AUG-1992 12:53 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Has anyone tried displaying DEC GKS applications to a Sun SPARCstation running OpenWindows 3.0? We have various X display devices and several windows applications that can be shown on the different X displays. However when the GKS window is send to the sun the icon appears the disappears again very quickly. I cannot find any useful error messages to indicate the problem. The display worked when Openwindows 2.0 was used. ================================================================================ Note 5.0 DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS 4 replies OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 19 lines 27-AUG-1992 12:25 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't know if this is OPENVMS or WORKSTATIONS, as it is a DECwindows question; The logical name DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS can be used with various tools that use the print widget to reduce the time taken to search for all printer queues before displaying the print widget itself... prime example is DECwrite, which on my main machine takes up to 50 seconds to find all the printers available... It works fine with just one printer queue name, but how do you specify multiple printers? DEFINE DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS FRED,TOM,BILL DEFINE DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS "FRED,TOM,BILL" DEFINE DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS "FRED TOM BILL" ? Your first and second choices will both work, and indeed are equivalent, since the strings you provided are all upper case. The third one won't work. On my system I define it with $define DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS - pk_post,cao_06_post,cao_02_post,cao_lf01r_post ================================================================================ Note 5.2 DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS 2 of 4 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 18 lines 27-AUG-1992 15:10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Note 5.1 by OPNNET::KEOGH Thanks Pat. > > DEFINE DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS FRED,TOM,BILL > > DEFINE DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS "FRED,TOM,BILL" > What is required is a multi-valued logical name. Your first and second > choices will both work, and indeed are equivalent, since the strings > you provided are all upper case. I thought (a) and (b) were different; the first would create a logical name with three translations, and the second would create a logical name with one translation of "FRED,TOM,BILL". I'll try it again (when I get back), but last time I did so it only ever gave me the first one. James ================================================================================ Note 5.3 DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS 3 of 4 OPNNET::KEOGH 4 lines 27-AUG-1992 15:19 -< Silly me >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Silly me, you're right. You want 2), not 1) That is a single-valued logical name that translates to a comma-seperated list. ================================================================================ Note 5.4 DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_PS 4 of 4 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 1 line 27-AUG-1992 16:10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Pat. ================================================================================ Note 6.0 Wrapping in NOTES No replies OPNNET::GARNERR30 "Robin Garner" 4 lines 27-AUG-1992 13:53 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Has anybody tried to turn Wrap on in the DECwindows NOTES interface editor ? I've found the resource file with an appropriate looking resource name, and set it there, but no luck. Has some misguided NOTES developer actually hardcoded this into the application ? ================================================================================ Note 7.0 Other WS KB -> DECterm 1 reply OPNNET::WONGS3 5 lines 27-AUG-1992 15:26 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does anyone know or have a keymapping for, say, a SUN type 4 keyboard which allows the correct operation of EDT and/or TPU editor? Thanks, Stanley. ================================================================================ Note 7.1 Other WS KB -> DECterm 1 of 1 OPNNET::PENINGTONA27 12 lines 27-AUG-1992 18:20 -< some utilities for keyboard mapping >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, we used a 101 (PC) style kekyboard to do this. xmodmap can be used both to change the keymapping for use with X applications and to list the current keymappings. I think it is in /usr/openwin/bin. Use it without any arguments to get help! Create a file containing the xmodmap commands and call it from the users .xinitrc file. Another useful utility to work out what is actually being sent is xev. If it isn't in /usr/openwin/bin look in /usr/openwin/bin/xview or /usr/openwin/demo. (The location of the programs varies with the version of OpenWindows.) No replies OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 8 lines 28-AUG-1992 11:47 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From my technical knowledge of X-Windows, keymaps, modifiers and all that, I can imagine an event filter to provide a keyboard-based macro definition language; similar to EVE's LEARN sequences (do as you teach). Has anyone seen such a program yet? James
