Perhaps at decus in adelaide as I am from Portland. Regards, Mark Dodd. ================================================================================ Note 3.0 Notes help 6 replies OPNNET::SMITHB10 15 lines 25-AUG-1992 14:59 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I seem to remember 12 months ago when I last used VaxNotes, I could very simply find out and read what notes I hadn't already seen. This time round I seem to have to open each conference and read it to do so. Is there an easier way? If so, what is it? Also, does anyone know if Digital have repriced Vax Notes so it's within the bounds of reality ? (When I asked for the price on my 8650 12 months ago the response from my DEC sales rep after some days waiting was ....Are you sitting down? If you're sitting down, here's the price... It even astounds me as a salesperson used to DEC prices!) ================================================================================ Note 3.1 Notes help 1 of 6 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 18 lines 25-AUG-1992 15:02 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open the conference, then do a DIRECTORY/UNSEEN *.* or DIR/UNS *.* or SET PROFILE/AUTOMATIC=DIRECTORY (not something you tend to do at Digital, since most notes conferences are off-shore and involve significant delays to get at them... this machine is real fast...) I seem to remember 2(?) years ago when I last used VaxNotes... Digital U.S. would read the notes and provide some answers. That way we could ask some real questions and sometimes get some real answers. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore and Notes doesn't seem to be such a useful tool at DECUS symposia any more. ================================================================================ Note 3.3 Notes help 3 of 6 OPNNET::ROSSR12 "Rollo Ross, Uni SA" 4 lines 25-AUG-1992 15:48 -< A new VAXnotes usage question >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I make VAXnotes select another unread message (preferably in a sensible order) using the ENTER key? On another VAXnotes system I use, ENTER will automatically move to a new conference when the current one is exhausted. This doesn't happen here. ================================================================================ Note 3.4 Notes help 4 of 6 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 7 lines 25-AUG-1992 17:18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rollo, On the base product, with no customisation, the ENTER key stops working when the conference is exhausted. What you were using sounds like an enhancement. It's been done most years, but the symposium tape for this year has already been mastered. However, we will attempt to get the notes onto this year's tape. We are trying to master a CD containing the 1991/1992 symposium collections. It can only be mastered at the symposium on Friday morning, which is prior to the notes being closed off. ================================================================================ Note 8.3 Notes After All 3 of 7 OPNNET::DUFFJ8 6 lines 27-AUG-1992 16:49 -< But ascii? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know that notes databases have been placed on most symposium tapes, but this is not very useful unless you have notes. I haven't seen a straight ascii extract for those of us without notes. No replies OPNNET::DELAINEM14 16 lines 27-AUG-1992 16:14 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For some the capability of procuring extra breakfast/lunch tickets would be good... Trouble is, I suspect that there will be little demand for this as it seems that many of those who bring their partner can also afford to have meals on the account at the hotel... For some others the expense of the evening dinners is frightening enough. $60 for the Dinner? Hell, you have to drink all night long to get the full value. So that's why some attendees don't seem to be around until lunch time... Anyway, if you get sick of McDonalds try the Pancake Parlors. An intersting range of food at passable prices.... Mike. ================================================================================ Note 10.0 last night's ST-TNG 1 reply OPNNET::WONGS3 6 lines 28-AUG-1992 10:08 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who watched last night's ST-TNG episode? Their computer was "infected" with an alien "virus" program which was working its way into the system. It took the whole episode to figure out that they should do a shutdown and restore from clean backups. Although, it appeared that the task only took a few seconds (everything on the ship was powered down). Will this a feature in the new version of BACKUP? ================================================================================ Note 10.1 last night's ST-TNG 1 of 1 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 19 lines 28-AUG-1992 11:45 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Note 10.0 by OPNNET::WONGS3 > Will this a feature in the new version of BACKUP? Yes. I'm sure that all they did was reboot from the backup copy, and since they used FASTBOOT it only took a few seconds. They probably use solid state disks as well. What you didn't see is that the system would have started an immediate backup to erase the corrupted "disks" by restoring from the running backup... Or maybe the backup took such a short time *because* they were using solid state disks and a cluster of Beta's, Digital's 300GVUP thimble processor... ;-)
