I haven't! I need an Expanded Memory Manager to run Borland's Quattro Pro V4 from DOS, that's why I'm using QEMM. However, QEMM and Windows V3.1 seem to dislike each other especially on DECpc 386DX hardware. Any ideas on a solution? ================================================================================ Note 2.1 Memory conflict on DECpc 1 of 4 OPNNET::MCINTOSHR2 8 lines 24-AUG-1992 11:44 -< Try it without QEMM >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you tried Windows 3.1's build in EMM emulation. I tried starting an EMM manually first for another product and it didn't work. Then reading the Windows manual a little closer it claims to have EMM emulation built in. I tried it and it worked! Maybe you should try it without QEMM too. ================================================================================ Note 2.2 Memory conflict on DECpc 2 of 4 OPNNET::GILLARDI20 3 lines 24-AUG-1992 15:24 -< No memory conflict on clones >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No problems with QEMM 6.01 and Windows 3.1 on many clones. I load RCV with the /A:parameter for mail notification but want to be able to unload RCV and load it again with this parameter (ie an environment variable %pcsauser%) whenever a new user logs in. This means that the user (%pcsauser%) receives mail messages regardless of the PC they are using - just like a VMS user !!. The variable gets set prior to login (via GETSTRING) and gets passed into login command - login node %pcsauser% * hope someone understands this !!!. setting memory marks before loading receiver and unloading to the mark doesn't work. ================================================================================ Note 3.1 Unloading RCV 1 of 2 OPNNET::MIRANDAN11 13 lines 26-AUG-1992 11:34 -< RCV and memory >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a problem we came across. We wanted to use RCV only to get password expiry/expiring messages back from VMS. I think the reason you cannot unload RCV is because RCV seems to create some pending Receive Datagram NCBs (up to 10) which pass memory addresses to the NETBIOS interface. If you forcibly unload RCV (which is possible using MARK and RELEASE) then NETBIOS has addresses of what it thinks are NCB buffers, but now point to no mans land. We got around our problem by using our own in-house written LOGIN program, which issues a Receive Datagram (pending) request to NETBIOS and then does a USE and then checks if a datagram has been received. I hope this is of some use. ================================================================================ Note 3.2 Unloading RCV 2 of 2 OPNNET::TAPIAM6 8 lines 27-AUG-1992 12:40 -< Turning RCV OFF and ON. >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You do not say why you want to unload RCV but I assume is because some applications get lock up when messages come through. If so, you could turn RCV off before you run the application and back on afterwards. RCV must be in RAM to do this. It doesn't work if in EMS. To turn it off you go RCV/T:0 and T:1 to go ON. (Check the book). ================================================================================ Note 4.0 TCP/IP services for dos 6 replies OPNNET::WALKERK9 6 lines 25-AUG-1992 15:46 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With TCP/IP servcie for Dos, can you run both IP and DECNET stacks concurrently. Conventional memory is a problem, as only 1 of the 2 protocol stacks can be configured to use Expanded Memory at a time. For more information on exactly how to set this up, and Sample CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, STARTNET.BATs etc. see note 106 in the Pathworks Customer Notes Conference by visiting the Customer Support Stand (near the Playground), or by using the X25 "Dial-home terminals" with the following info. X25 Address:22733600102 Username: DECUS Password: (none required). -------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are not familiar with the Pathworks Customer Notes Conference, read on.... The CSC is currently offering a Pathworks Customer Notes Conference similar to this one, except larger and unlike the DECUS Notes Conference, is permanently offered FREE to anyone with a CSC support agreement. (i.e. if you already log Pathworks calls with the CSC, then you most probably have an agreement). It can be accessed via Dial-up Modem or X25 (PSI) for the cost of a local call (reverse-charge billed to Digital). For the duration of DECUS, a DECUS account has been set up as mentioned above, allowing all symposium members to enter or reply to notes. To receive a permanent account, allowing continued access from your home-site afte DECUS, simply obtain a form from the Customer Support Stand near the Playground! Alex Lilic. Chris Lord documented running Decnet,Tcp and netbeui. Memory can get a little tight, but if you don't need all services under tcp you can load just a couple of drivers for telnet etc. (load and unload as needed). Also if you need to share local printers and are using tcpip, it is fairly easy to load lat to allow this. None of this is supported but it all works. If you would like a copy of STACKS.ZIP jusy leave me a message... ================================================================================ Note 4.5 TCP/IP services for dos 5 of 6 OPNNET::TONKINP2 6 lines 27-AUG-1992 18:50 -< Windows NT is the answer ??? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are looking toward Windows NT to solve these problems, as it will be a real operating system running on a PC. Just a quick note for those interested did you know if you go the the next letter in the alphabet for each character in "VMS" you get "WNT". Isn't that funny or does this mean that Windows NT is a logical progression from VMS. ================================================================================ Note 4.6 TCP/IP services for dos 6 of 6 OPNNET::WALKERK9 8 lines 28-AUG-1992 10:59 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi. This is is the output from NCP SHOW LINE COUNT command on the client - a compaq 286 with 5Mb ram total. The counter is showing something between 300 and 2500 of these for a single 8 hour day. We have had a TDR performed on the t-wire segment and all is OK. We have other 286 and 386 clients that don't have this error counter. My engineer tells me that the DEPCA card has received a valid message but had nowhere to physicall put it so it was thrown away and the sender would have been asked to retransmit. BUT I can't find the cause of this problem. Can anyone advise me on things to look at. pb :-) ================================================================================ Note 5.1 System Buffer Unavailable 1 of 6 OPNNET::BOTTERILLB30 6 lines 25-AUG-1992 19:13 -< PCFS log may help >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You could look in the PCFS log in PCSA system area. Look for the node name of the PC with the problem, may help? ================================================================================ Note 5.2 System Buffer Unavailable 2 of 6 OPNNET::HAWLEYD13 "Dave Hawley, IT Manager, Tektron" 14 lines 27-AUG-1992 10:22 -< PC is too slow >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contrary to popular belief, the speed of a PC's Ethernet transfer is DIRECTLY proportional to the speed of the PC. Ie. putting "fast" Ethernet cards in a "slow" PC will NOT speed up transfer rates. COMPAQ 286's, if memory serves me, were usually run at "safe" slow speeds, like 8MHz to 12MHz. If my 20MHz 386 is any guide, you could simply be running out of PC grunt! I suspect that the PC cannot process the incoming data fast enough to clear the buffers on the card. If the machine is on a "busy" segment, especially with lots of other Ethernet devices in action, it will suffer severe information overload. Possible solution is to switch to a 16-bit Ethernet card (3com Etherlink II/16 is fully supported by Pathworks). The PC can at least gulp down twice the data per clunk ... ================================================================================ Note 5.3 System Buffer Unavailable 3 of 6 OPNNET::CAMERONJ12 9 lines 27-AUG-1992 10:26 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Given the previous reply, the original writer should be able to provoke the problem by monitoring the line counters before and after a large passage of data into the pc. In theory, retransmit requests caused by this problem should also be visible in counters at the other end of the virtual circuit. Monitor those at the same time. James ================================================================================ Note 5.4 System Buffer Unavailable 4 of 6 OPNNET::BRUGGINKP7 13 lines 27-AUG-1992 14:36 -< any more ideas >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .1 .2 .3 all wrong other 286's OK, and that segment has only one node connected. if the network was real busy then other pc's would show at least a slight hint at the same problem. wood changing the e.net card help, or could it be a dick-y fly-lead from the wall socket. pb :-) ================================================================================ Note 5.5 System Buffer Unavailable 5 of 6 OPNNET::MIRANDAN11 19 lines 27-AUG-1992 15:18 -< Something different. >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know if this will help or not. We've had problems with PC's losing their drive connections. I don't know if the relevant PCs had unusually high "System buffers Unavailable". There are two parameters that might be relevant. 1) Lowering the value of Transmit &/or Receive pipes. This is meant to help the PC use flow control more efficiently (i.e. tell the server to slow down or stop before buffers become unavailable). 2) Change the flow control mechanism. On the DNNETHAT line in STARTNET.BAT try /FC:1. I don't know very much about these parameters but am trying to find out from DEC. Neal B-} ================================================================================ Note 5.6 System Buffer Unavailable 6 of 6 OPNNET::HAWLEYD13 "Dave Hawley, IT Manager, Tektron" 13 lines 27-AUG-1992 15:24 -< Oh dear ... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Could be ANYTHING with a PC. Try the "classic" approach. (a) Try another PC on the same connection; (b) Try the Ethernet card in another PC; (c) Try the original PC+card on another connection. Lots of mind-numbingly boring fun, but you might just get it right without having to use a TDR or fancy LAN analyser software. ================================================================================ Note 6.0 Wollongong PathWay/DOS with Pathworks/DOS 2 replies OPNNET::GUNJKOA29 8 lines 26-AUG-1992 10:53 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We use Wollongong's PathWay product (TCP/IP services for DOS, MAC, VAX) and require a machine to be a LAN Manager Server for DOS PC's. To date we have used Wollongong's SMB implementation on our VAX-6310 but I am wondering ... can we use PC/TCP from Wollongong to connect to a native VAX Pathworks for DOS server? I believe it too uses LAN Manager but I'm told it only has DECnet available as a transport. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance ... ================================================================================ Note 6.1 Wollongong PathWay/DOS with Pathworks/DOS 1 of 2 OPNNET::BOTTERILLB30 2 lines 26-AUG-1992 10:56 -< Visit Miden at ON$DEC >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit the ON$DEC Miden stand they have pathway running and my be able to advise. Their central hub is a Vax system. ================================================================================ Note 6.2 Wollongong PathWay/DOS with Pathworks/DOS 2 of 2 OPNNET::ALBERTD14 6 lines 27-AUG-1992 08:12 -< PATHWORKS and TCP/IP >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have used the PATHWAY software to connect to a PATHWORKS server using the TCP/IP transport option. This is standard LAN Manager connection which requires UCX or similar TCP/IP package to run on VAX/VMS. It also seems to work on an OS/2 server. ================================================================================ Note 7.0 Transmit & Receive pipe quotas 1 reply OPNNET::MIRANDAN11 8 lines 26-AUG-1992 11:41 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We use OS/2 servers running Pathworks for OS/2 v1.1. At a couple of our sites we have had worse response times from brand new 486 EISA based servers than much older 386/20 ISA based servers. After much trial and error we discovered that lowering the value of Transmit and Receive pipe quotas on the PC clients actually increased the performance to where we would expect it to be. Does anyone kno why or what these pipe quotas do? ================================================================================ Note 7.1 Transmit & Receive pipe quotas 1 of 1 UTRAIN::links 8 lines 28-AUG-1992 11:04 -< Timing of Acks and Naks >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neil, These parameters deal with the amount of information transfered before the recieving node is required to return an ack. Try the VMS documentation set... ;-) or give me a call next week. Regards, Andrew Beeson ================================================================================ Note 8.0 Flow control affecting device connections No replies OPNNET::MIRANDAN11 9 lines 26-AUG-1992 11:45 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of our sites using a OS/2 server and IBM PS/2 clients had regular problems with clients losing their drive assignments. This caused problems with their spreadsheet package. They couldn't save their files back properly. The problem was resolved (I hope, keeping fingers crossed!!) by using the parameter /fc:1 on the DNNETHAT line in STARTNET.BAT. What I would like to know is why does flow control cause these problems? ans why is one type of flow control "better" than another? ================================================================================ Note 9.0 Wanted: WPS plus for Rainbow No replies OPNNET::BURNETM26 8 lines 26-AUG-1992 16:03 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does any one have WPS PLUS on floppy for the Rainbow PC. The problem amounts to causing the volume holding the disk/file service to drop and go into a remount state. This is rather inconvenient! Has anyone else seen this problem and/or know of a fix. Ta muchly Steve McInerney ================================================================================ Note 10.1 Large file copying to VMS 1 of 3 OPNNET::HAWLEYD13 "Dave Hawley, IT Manager, Tektroni" 3 lines 27-AUG-1992 10:25 -< Works for us. Some thoughts on diagnosis; If it's a hardware problem with the disk or controller, then simulating the same quantity and size of I/O's should make it do it again. Doing VMS COPYs may not be the same. Anyone know how Pathworks I/O behaves relative to "normal" I/O? By "remount state" do you mean "mount verification"? James ================================================================================ Note 10.3 Large file copying to VMS 3 of 3 OPNNET::MCINERNEYS13 9 lines 28-AUG-1992 11:23 -< Thanks, but ... >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks so far but ... No. It is not related to quota. I've disabled quota's on my account :-} Yes. The disk is doing a mount verification. I don't know if this helps further but the disks we are using are removable drives. This may have a bearing on the matter? Note also that I can drop the LAD drive as well. ie. quotas are not an issue on those. ================================================================================ Note 11.0 ventura No replies OPNNET::KEANEK18 2 lines 27-AUG-1992 12:20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is anyone using Ventura (for windows 3.1) on pathworks ? I reboot a PC here in the playground and LOGON to PATHworks as me then kick off NOTES (or is called CONFERENCING). Problem: I am presented with an entirely different view of class MAIN. Entries I deleted while on the VAX are magically back again and if I UPDATE the CLASS, the count of unseen items seems to relate to when I previously used NOTES on the PC and not how I left it after the VAX session. I don't like them seeing LOGIN.COM or all the other files that various applications stick in that directory. We've got users (and I use the term here with all the malice the "touchy feely" types dislike about the term) who insist on having XTREE PRO and then deciding they don't know need the stuff in directories called DECNET and DOS and things like that, and then before you can type "supercallifr........." they ring saying that their PC doesn't work.
