This software contains a device control library and a symbiont that provides support for Apple's laserwriter family of printers. My site has successfully used this product to print postscript and ASCII to HP Laserjet II's and III's. On the down side complicated postscript can take ages to print to one of these printers even at 19.2K. I think that the license for this product is bundled with VMS (similar to PCSA). It is the LASER symbiont mentioned by a couple of others. I have modified it to handle input from Multinet TCP/IP (which submits the job /NOTE=...) and PATHWORKS for MAC (which submits the job /NOTE=...). In the LASER symbiont, /NOTE is used to supply a small amount of POSTSCRIPT to the printer (in addtion to that required by the form type). This symbiont uses /PARAMETER to supply other information (eg font size, number of reprints of each page, etc) which makes it tricky to use with things like DECwindows which assume you are driving a Digital symbiont and hence uses /PARAMETER to specify attributes for the job. And of course the syntax of the two /PARAMETER usages are different and incompatible ... My next job is to modify the symbiont to make it DECprint compatible and also to handle ANSI control codes (more difficult :-) I wasn't aware that the PATHWORKS for MAC included a symbiont capable of driving a serial port (I thought it had Ethertalk only) so I might give that a go when I get back. Regularly (couple of times a week) someone using this facility will report they can't get back to ALL-IN-1 by typing . The word from Digital in Ireland (?) was that the COM subsystem uses various system services appropriate for physical devices and it is only good luck that LAT works. Will this ever be rectified ? Will I ever be able to define a line class that uses LAT services rather than depending on the ability to allocate a physical device as the contention mechanism ? How do other people set this up in a cluster where it is not appropriate to force all users of this facility to use only one VAX ? In the session "PATHWORKS Printing from PCs" a person indicated they had some problems which they thought were caused by bugs in the Adobe postscript ROM. Could that person (and any other people) reply and give some details as to their problems with the LZR1560. My organization has one LZR1560 and we have had some difficulty printed A3 jobs to it. Our LZR1560 is connected to a VAX/VMS system via RS-232 and a DEC terminal server, using Graymatter's Scriptserver software. The VAX/VMS queue the printer is attached to often seems to go into a stalled state for no apparent reason. Graham Rawolle ================================================================================ Note 8.1 Dataproducts LZR1560 laser 1 of 3 OPNNET::HAWLEYD13 "Dave Hawley, IT Manager, Tektron" 54 lines 27-AUG-1992 15:15 -< Saga of the DP LZR's >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YES, IT WAS ME! We have a LZR960, and it is attached to Appletalk, thence to a Webster Multiport Gateway to Ethernet, thence to the VAX. We run Pathworks for DOS and for Macintosh. The problem we were having was two-fold. First, the 960 would go to feed a second page and then "hang up" and wouldn't be cleared without using the 2-4-0-V reset switch (contrary to the manual). Meanwhile, I noticed quite a few OPER messages saying that the symbiont for the LZR had "terminated with error". It should in fact never terminate at all. Sometimes the associated queue would show "Paused", and occasionally it would actually be stopped. After a lot of farting about (and a board swap from DP) it wouldn't go away. Finally, a savvy DP engineer told me that the problem was in fact the Adobe Postscript processor chips hanging the printer processor board, thus stalling the printer. Now, I'm no expert on printer internals, so I'll try to describe it as given to me, and excuse me if I'm not exact on the details. Basically, Adobe provide Postscript processor chips that are "standard" and usable by most printer CPUs. Since they "own" Postscript they have the monopoly on them. The latest series of DP printers are using the newest Adobe chipsets. There is apparently a "bug" in these Adobe chipsets that causes the printer CPU to stall waiting for the Adobe chip to "complete". No more work on any other function can be done (they don't multitask), including page feed sensing and control, and in this case, network comms. Localtalk requires that printers, Macs, etc. maintain a constant dialogue even if idle - they "ping" each other to make sure they are still there. The printer that is stalled is then seen to "disappear" from the network, Pathworks notifies the the queue manager, and the queue gets stalled. The reason for the worrying OPER messages is still not clear to me ... any Pathworks for Mac gurus out there? DP know of the problem, and Adobe have a revised chipset in beta test, but being the monopoly they are, this is taking time. I was told three months minimum about six weeks ago. Our printer remains usable (it's a very nice unit too), but I have to keep on restarting the queue, and the users have no guarantee of a multi-page print without problems. OK, end of saga. Does that help people? By the way, DP Australia have been as helpful as they can with this. There is even a special person assigned to look after this problem. I suggest that if you are looking at a DP printer that you ask about the latest chipsets - I understand that NEW DP printers have them in already. ================================================================================ Note 8.2 Dataproducts LZR1560 laser 2 of 3 OPNNET::ALEXANDERC13 28 lines 27-AUG-1992 18:26 -< paper tray problem >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >My organization has one LZR1560 and we have had some >difficulty printed A3 jobs to it.
