VAX_C has logged quite a few CR_WAITS. While watching the SHOW CLUSTER display, is this field continuously incrementing or does it grow in bursts when things are busy? If it's continuous you'll definitely want to increase the CLSUTER_CREDIT (the number of buffers available for cluster communications) value in SYSGEN on VAX_C if it's not already maxed out. If this behavior is bursty then increasing the value might not eliminate any stalls (each time you experience a CR_WAIT the system is essentially stalled waiting for a bufer to become available). It could be that your VAX is just too slow to keep up with the other systems (faster Alphas I presume?). Perhaps you can correlate the increase in CR_WAITS with the observance of processes in RWSCS state? Ideally, CR_WAITS should be 0. ------------------------------ Date: 9 Sep 2008 13:20:09 -0500 From: koehler@eisner.nospam.encompasserve.org (Bob Koehler) Subject: Re: Loose Cannon-dian Message-ID: In article <6ino0dFrikcdU2@mid.individual.net>, billg999@cs.uofs.edu (Bill Gunshannon) writes: > > What have I removed that decreases safety when I use null terminated > strings? "A null-terminated string is nothing you would write into". Maybe sensible people wouldn't write a null-terminated string of unknown length into a fixed length buffer but enough daft ones are in the business of writing programs (and getting it wrong) that the sprintf_s (s = safe, except they're not) family now exist. "RSX-11 (ASCIZ data type)." Same here, .ASCIZ in Macro11. RSX just used it as an easy way to count string length, but QIOs etc couldn't use it directly. IIRC RT11 did have a terminal output directive which used .ASCIZ directly. Anyway, descriptors can be used for more than .ASCIZ, that's half the point. Re C2/B1 etc: "So where's the difference ? " As Bob already said very eloquently, "where C2 and B1 don't go". Including some of the things I already mentioned, like quotas for DoS prevention... taken seriously, security means more than just preventing unauthorised access to objects (and reliably logging security-related events), it means ensuring an important application/ service can't easily be stopped. What stops a malicious user monopolising (eg) pagefile on Windows or Linux, thereby rendering an application unavailable? Nothing stops them, that's what. On VMS, that's what quotas are for. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Sep 2008 17:11:18 -0600 From: Jeff Campbell Subject: Re: Multinet NTP Message-ID: <1221001469_1722@isp.n> Jim wrote: > On Sep 8, 9:25 pm, Jeff Campbell wrote: >> Richard B. It is expected that a new universe will be created inside the LHC (lasting an eternity for the people in it, but mere millionth of a second for us) and it is possible that it will also create a black hole that will suck up the earth (like the vaccuum cleaner that sucks the pink panther and then sucks itself out of existance) It is unclear what effect the LHC experiment may have on the connection between my universe and the one where most of comp.os.vms lives in. BBC said that they won't have it at full power today and it will take a year before they risk running at at full power. www.cern.ch is the official website. As in any modern event, they are to have a live webcast. It is not clear what's we'll see in it. It is not clear if we will actually hear a "big bang". Good luck to all those who worked on that project, and lets hope that they doN't rely on Windows to run it. And remember that, as in any science fiction movie, all the lights in the world will dim when they turn the power on to the collider :-) :-) :-) :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Sep 2008 11:13:46 -0700 From: Marty Kuhrt Subject: Re: Security alarm msg Message-ID: Tom Linden wrote: > I noted following on opcon.
