It doesn't matter if it was found to be illegal or not. What _does_ matter
is the perpetuity of the practice.

I'm not concerned about whether or not EFI is used nor if Weendoze is or
is not supported.

Speaking of EFI, have you looked at rEFIt at http://macupdate.com ?

There were many intel based machines that came with NO Weendoze license;
the Billzebub tax on them was still levied though.

It'd be an awful cold cold day in hell before I would ever sink a single
penny into any Micro$oft product or into any company providing Weendoze
products. I recently returned a mobile phone to Sprint after discovering
that it contained M$ code!

Several US auto manufacturers have lost my $ too since they started adver-
tizing the incorporation of M$ in their offerings. Why do I picture little
Danny Lloyd on his big wheel peddling around the corporate office spaces of
Detroit's auto manufacturers chanting "Redmond! Redmond! Redmond!" with a
voice reminiscent of "Froggy" from the Our Gang/The Little Rascals series
and drooling down his shirt?

I know that.

I can't imagine Steve Jobs being able to stomach paying a "tax" to
Bill Gates on each Intel Mac sold just because it could run Windows.

In any case, if your PPC Macs are doing the job you need then there's
no reason to upgrade, but if it comes a time you need more compute
power or you find the available applications lacking (and it will
happen sooner or later - look at VAX vs Alpha vs Integrity OpenVMS)
then you are only hurting yourself by avoiding Intel-based Macs.

Subject: Noob File-Transfer (License to .com) Question
Message-ID: <6d1r95-q63.ln1@boss.home.folkerts-net.de>

Hi,

I have a Problem with the Transfer of a Hobbyist-License "as"
Commandprocedure-File to a OpenVMS 8.3 Machine. First I might mention
that my Origins are in the /370 and Unix-World. However, I used to work
on VMS for a while, but never became a good friend with VMS during that
time -- and now wanted to become one using a AlphaStation 255 @home.

I Installed the Machine from the Hobbyist CD, using all Defaults except
for not installing DecWindows (the machine has a Matrox Graka). I also
entered the License-Data for the OpenVMS during Install.

However, when trying to configure TCP/IP the Configure-Tool also wanted
to activate DecNet which seems to require another License than the
Base-System, so I cannot start TCP/IP (for sure the Experts can, but
unfortunately not me).

No Problem, I obtained the PAKs for the Layered Products from
openvmshobbyist, too.

To make my live easier I wanted to Transfer the License, which looks
like a Command procedure, as such to the Alpha.

However, I did not manage to get it running :-(

I Googled and searched the VMS-FAQ but didn't find a hint :-(

What I did: I saved the License-Mail, removed the Headers etc. so that
only a Text-File containg the License-Info was left. As I work on Linux
I also converted the File to DOS-Formatm put both, the Unix- and the
DOS-Format into a iso-FS, burned that on CD and mounted on VMS.

However, the file seems not to be of the correct Format. So I tried
exchange, convert and set file/attr (setting stream_lf and stream_cr)
but nothing really solved my Problem :-(

I'm sure it's just a very simple thing to make a Unix- or DOS-Textfile a
workable VMS-Commandprocedure-File -- however, I didn't find out, how :-(

When trying to execute the DOS-File(s) I get the error:

%DCL-W-IVVERB, unrecognized command verb - check validity and spelling
  \
   $\
%DCL-W-IVVERB, unrecognized command verb - check validity and spelling
  \
   $\

Which I think is caused by the CR? I managed to get a Unix-File working
but it stops

$ @LICENSE_UNIX_1.LIS
%LICENSE-F-BADCHK, checksum does not validate for X500-DIRECTORY-SERVER

However, in ed the Checksum does look exactly as it does in the EMail I
got (so, probably there is some bad character after the Checksum, too?

So, it would be great if someone could point me to a place where I can
find how to "correctly" get the License-Document into an executable File
(please note that I have to transfer using a CDROM; I wanted to FTP the
stuff as Text but as I cannot start TCP/IP w/o the licenses being
installed I have a recursion-Problem here.

MTIA!
Cheers,
_ralf_

UCX. The original product name was VMS Ultrix Connection.

   Good.

It'd probably be easier to put the UCX PAK in manually (and get TCPIP
(the new name) configured) than it would be to do all the DIRE /FULL
and/or DUMP /BYTE tasks to see what happened to the useful bytes, and
then do the CONVERT and/or SET FILE /ATTRIBUTES tasks to straighten them
out again.

thanks for that hint! I'll give it a try.

One more question: Once TCP/IP is up and running, can I painles transfer
the License-File and expect it to be of a valid Commandprocedure-File?
Or would I still have to perform some kind of conversion?

Without knowing details of your particular network configuration, once
you have successfully licensed, installed, and configured TCP/IP, you
*should* be able to do a simple ASCII FTP transfer of the licenses from
your system where you received the email, to your VMS system. Once the
transfer has completed, you *should* be able to @<name-of-license-file>
to register the licenses. Once you have successfully registered the
licenses, a simple $license load will load the licenses, and you're on
your way!

Good luck!

Currently, one can read on the web.

There are no plans to add new functionality to the PATHWORKS 32
product. This would include support for new versions of the
Microsoft Windows operating system. Not all new technologies
operate with PATHWORKS 32 in all environments. Customers refreshing
their Windows environments to the latest PC desktop that include
Intelligent Network Interface Controllers (NICS), hyper-threading,
and support for plug-and-play hardware devices could experience
server crashes and system instability. In such complex environments,
HP will make its best effort to provide support but cannot guarantee
	a resolution in all cases.

Does anyone know, if HP's "best effort" made eXcursion working (supported)
on M$ Vista already (or when this will/could happen)?

And no, I haven't tried myself already, I've no M$ Vista so far...
