I needed to add a second IDE hard drive to the XP1000 running VMS 7.3. The machine had a CD burner as a master DQB0: on IDE bus #1 and a 100GB drive as master DQA0: on the other IDE bus. I decided to just make the second 100GB IDE drive the slave on the bus the CD burner was on, but was a no-go. When I set the IDE drive to master and the CD burner to slave, it worked perfectly. Now have DQA0: 100GB IDE HDD DQB0: 100GB IDE HDD DQB1: CDROM /burner DQA0: and the CDROM are factory original, or whatever John Wisniewski put in. I thought he ordered it like that but may be mistaken. (Yes it is one of his two XP1000's may he RIP, but the system is running a hobbyist license, which would please him in any case) I tried to find into on this in "ask the wizard" but was not very successful. My question is: how large an IDE drive can be put in the XP1000 using VMS 7.3? Message-ID: <459FF512.9040102@comcast.net> You could create the following command file: $! $ boot_device = F$TRNLNM("SYS$SYSDEVICE") $! $ open xfl jf.scr; /write $ write xfl "$!" $ write xfl "$ mcr sysman" $ write xfl "set environment /cluster" $ write xfl "do show device /file ''boot_device'" $ write xfl "exit" $ write xfl "$!" $ close xfl $! $ pipe @jf.scr; | search sys$pipe "[VMS$COMMON.SYSEXE]SYSBOOT.EXE;","Files accessed" $! Then exeucte it: $ @X.COM Files accessed on device $1$DGA100: (node1 PGA, node1) on 5-JAN-2007 19:16:29.05 Files accessed on device $1$DGA100: (node2 PGA, node2) on 5-JAN-2007 19:16:29.68 00000000 [VMS$COMMON.SYSEXE]SYSBOOT.EXE;1 Obviously from the result above - I do not boot multple servers - or at least only one server is booted from one disk. Do not know about the ALT_HOST_AVAIL... Hope this helps... Only difference is the second one has 2 IDE drives. First one has DQA0 (disk), DQA1, DQB0, DQB1, DVA0 Second one has DQA0 (disk), DQB0 (disk). Is there a way to configure the first machine to have only DQA0 since that is the only device installed in it and all others are non-existant devices ? Also, DVA0 is shown as an RX26 device. Does this mean that I could theoretically take the disquette drive from an old VAXstation and put it in the Alpha ? (and how come it isn't shown on the second alpha ?) Depending on your VMS version, MOUNT/OVER=ID should suffice. MOUNT will detect the media format and adjust accordingly. This may need V7.3-2 or later - not sure. Note, however, that all files will appear as "Format: Undefined" to RMS, unless you explicitly specify /UNDEFINED_FAT=needed_value on the MOUNT command. -- David J Dachtera dba DJE Systems http://www.djesys.com/ Unofficial OpenVMS Marketing Home Page http://www.djesys.com/vms/market/ Unofficial Affordable OpenVMS Home Page: http://www.djesys.com/vms/soho/ Unofficial OpenVMS-IA32 Home Page: http://www.djesys.com/vms/ia32/ Unofficial OpenVMS Hobbyist Support Page: http://www.djesys.com/vms/support/ ------------------------------ End of INFO-VAX 2007.013 ************************
